Lollar alnico pole P90 vs BKP Nantucket P90
« on: March 13, 2016, 02:47:50 AM »
Been researching these two and not sure which way to go.  I'm intrigued by the Lollar for having what's reported to be additional clarity by using albino poles on the P90.  The Nantucket is arguably quite clear as well.  Anyone heard the Lollar to know if it's all that?  I like the idea but I'm also such a BKP fanboy these days I'm not sure if I want to risk it :)

Hey man! I was in the same situation as you, considering the Lollar and the Wolfetone Meaner mostly because I had not heard too much of the Nantucket. However, I trusted the BKP quality and took a shot at a Nantucket bridge for my LP Jr. Best decision I have ever made, seriously! I have been a humbucker man almost ever since I picked up my first guitar, but P90s are where it is at for me. I even got a second set of Nantuckets for my LP Special, and could not be happier! Do yourself a favour and give the Nantucket a shot, you won't be sorry

Thanks for the feedback.  I also started out with the impression that P90s weren't as "good" as humbuckers or tele/strat style single coils.  But after more experience with them on my G&L I have fallen in love.  I have a pair of Supermassives and after some getting used to them with my pedals and amp, really dig them.

I am probably going to save up for a Collings 290dc and those come stock with the Lollar P90s with alnico poles.  So it may be quite some time before I purchase it (it's roughly $3k, which will take me a while...) I can actually do a side by side if I get that one.  Since it's a 24 7/8 scale with Mahogany body and glued mahogany neck, it's probably quite warm sounding.  My guess is that those Lollars compliment that guitar nicely because they may have a bit more clarity than a standard P90 to balance the warmer tones from the neck and body.

In the meantime, I'm doing a build and not sure if I should use the Piledriver bridge and Abraxis neck set, or if I should rout it for P90s instead.  If so, I'm hoping someone has used those Lollars and can comment on them.  It's hard to imagine the Nantucket isn't awesome but I am hoping for some info on the Lollars and what character they have.

Both will satisfy. I would go Lollar if you play mainly cleans and light crunch, Nantuckets will be imho a little more agressive, however they have fantastic cleans too (as all vintage(hot) BKP's).
