I'm not sure what to do with this new (2nd hand) guitar. Got another Mahogany Nitefly, this one H-H, which I have had a few totally differing plans for, mostly involving a Nailbomb, but current options are...
a) it isn't isn't mint so I could change to a H-S-S scratch plate and put a Nailbomb and Irish Tours in. This is then just like my mint customised mahogany MIDI Fly, but then I'd never have to worry about the midi electronics getting beered/sweated or it taking a bash if I get carried away on a small stage. A guaranteed favourite I can worry less about, but maybe far too boring since I kinda already have this. So...
b) Put a sustainiac in the neck to go with the (probably) nailbomb bridge. Fun times. Or...
c) Try a P90 neck and see how this floats my boat. Mmmm... exciting, but is it what I want? Never had a P-90 guitar, but the "concept" of that fat SC/clearer HB for stoner rock type parts appeals. But is the neck where I'd want it? I would't really wanna lose a bridge HB though.
Questions:I'm usually a bridge pickup player for most heavy stuff, but then like to often use either HB neck for medium gain bluesy stuff, or SC neck for funky stuff. So, would a P90 neck give me a nice cross between both for clean/medium gain blues/funky shizzle? And an added good heavy alternative to the HB? Or is it just too different a beast and might miss all targets, and just "does what it does" (not that I still shouldn't give it a go)?
The other pickup positions are all fine and dandy, but rarely used; I'm normally bridge OR neck kinda guy 95% of the time. So I was also then pondering H-S-H, or H-S-P90 for this reason but they may not be ideal either. I just thought though I can always enlarge a hole in an HSS scratch plate, and maybe I could add a middle P-90? Then I get my funky SC neck, but the rarely used middle position could give me the joy of somewhere between a P90 bridge and P90 neck. This *could* be ideal in theory. Would I use a neck or bridge version if I had a P90 middle?
I've never heard of it but I'm sure I could happily wire a 5-way super switch to do:
HB (bridge) -> split HB + P90 (mid) -> P90 (mid) -> P90 + SC (neck) -> SC Neck
Or just split the HB with a push-pull.
Has anyone ever tried something similar or got any thoughts? Am I some kinda twisted genius, or is this just the rantings of a deluded fool who would be wasting a P90 in a silly fashion? Discuss...
