PRS Pickup Suggestion
« on: November 28, 2016, 03:31:14 PM »
Looking for suggestions for replacing the bridge pickup in my Custom 24.  Currently stock.  I mainly tune to Eb with some Drop Db.  Play mainly with high gain but do clean up enough that I'd like to keep the option to have the split coil wired with the 5 way super switch.  I like a lot of harmonic detail as well.  Styles I play are Alter Bridge, Satriani, Zakk.

Cold sweat? Warpig?  Something else?

Thanks for any input!

What sort of amp do you use?  Do you use an overdrive to boost as well?

You're spoilt for choice really but I wouldn't say cold sweat or warpig for any of those players.

I'm using various amps. A Triple Recrifier that's been modded by Voodoo Amps, a Orange OR15.  Lately I've been using mainly my Kemper with various high gain profiles.  I do tend to use a overdrive (Maxon OD808) .

Well, a Cold Sweat could be the compromise choice.  To be honest I don't see a lot of common ground between the players you mention.  Miracle Man would be best for Wylde tone but not for the other two

I guess I went for a little more diverse than narrowing it down huh?  Wylde isn't really something I'm after tone wise, I guess I was trying to highlight aggressive harmonics.  I'm probably looking for something more Tremonti esque in tone.  I have his PRS signature in a Les Paul but am wanting something with a bit more harmonics and aggressiveness behind it.

You might be happy with a Black Dog, but I'll leave it to others with experience of that pickup and PRS guitars to comment.

The only humbuckers I have tried in a PRS are Rebel Yells in a Standard 22. I really like them. In that guitar they are fat with a lot of output and a real attacking upper-mid. Not tons of low end. A really fun pickup to play with.

There might be other pickups that do the tone you're looking for better. I don't know. But I can confirm Rebel Yells sound great in a PRS, and sound great for Eb/drop Db tunings. They have the prominent harmonics to pull off Zakk type stuff, even if they are nothing like the pickups he uses in other ways, and they are fat and high-output enough to manage Satriani and Alter Bridge stuff.

I knew someone with Crawlers in a PRS Custom 24, and he was really happy with them. I never heard his guitar plugged in, but as far as I know they could also be an option. Thicker sounding and a bit darker, from what I've heard.
Bare Knuckles owned: Mules, VHII, Rebel Yells, BKP-91, Strat 63 set, Riff Raffs.

my bandmate has a bridge miracle man in his PRS mccarty in Eb and drop C# and it sounds amazing
it works great for the Alter Bridge thing and I recall it sounding pretty good with a dual rectifier, although I'm not a fan of rectifiers (had the single and the dual)
he played through all sort of amps throughout the years (welll, he's the best amp tech in my city, so he's always testing lots of amps), and he always get really good tones out of that mccarty
the miracle man also splits really really well
my friend also had the cold sweat before in the same guitar and it sounded great too, but the harmonics sound sharper and thinner in comparison (more like Ty Tabor or Dimebag)
I personally like the cold sweat better, but it's a different type of tone
the miracle man sounds thicker and more modern
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat
