Orange Micro Dark, EHX Magnum 44 - thoughts?
« on: December 07, 2016, 05:43:30 PM »
I'd like to get something very light and portable, reliable and capable of doing a show in a small pub or cafe.

Looking at solid state due to small size and light weight.

I like how the Micro Dark has sounded in demos I've heard, and prefer its sound to the normal Micro Terror.

Since I have loads of SansAmp and SansAmp-type gear I could also just get a power amp, so I was looking at the Magnum 44.

What do people think about these things, or is there any other alternatives on these lines? I know it won't sound as good as my all valve gear, but would love to hear your thoughts.

I did a gig in a small club last year using one of these:

It was going into an Ear Candy 2x8 cab and the sound guy thought it was too loud!
So many pickups, so little time

Thats amazing, the sound guy didn't mic you up? I've been wondering about one of those hotone heads for a while.

Edit: found this video this morning, quite revealing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2J221bOvQsc

I love how you can have your back up amp in your coat pocket these days. :)

gwEm, you should check out Blackstar's offerings; for SS I think they have the best/fullest sound. The EHX, sadly, is rather poor and wooly sounding. You would need to add a couple of pedals just to get it to 'passable'.

I am using the Blackstar Fly for at home writing/jamming and songwriting rehearsals. With the extension cab, it can do the trick, but am not certain about gigging with it. I would look into the ID Core series if I were you. Surprisingly good tone for the money!

Thanks for the thoughts Ben. Sadly you're a tiny bit too late, as I ordered B-Stock Magnum 44 last night. Apparently, it should arrive today, according to their email. So I'll give you my thoughts on it with my SansAmp stuff. If it sounds bad, I can always move it on.

I've also purchased a Neodymium Creamback which I'm waiting on a cab for. I'm hoping for gigging without the lugging!

Ha, nice! Live the dream! :)

I am bringing the smallest rig I have ever brought to rehearsal tonight as well: guitar, Pedaltrain Nano for guitar; Boss Loop Station for flying in spoken word interlude; Arturia KeyStep/iPad for synth.

For gigging I still like to go semi-large these days and am currently vacillating between the Bumbox/2x12 or the Mesa Tremoverb combo...

It was a small 100 seater theatre and there were overheads on the stage, but no mic on the cab.  I was using it with the 55 Les Paul Custom and my Juansolo Gilmourizer.

Good luck with the EHX.
