Checked out the HBE Big D but sadly it was £165, a bit too expensive for me at the moment.

I was thinking more around the 50-70 bones range.

Yeah, not a cheap solution, but a permanent one! :)

(By the way, as an off-topic aside, since the matter was brought up by dakine ... I pay for my pedals, amps, pickups, and guitars, just like everyone else. I have chosen certain alliances and affiliations because I love the product and will stand behind it 1,000%.)

explain to me again why you needed to run an uber metal through an engl? unless it was the classic tube engl model...

It gave godly metal tones at bedroom levels.

But it still cr@pped out!
How can you recommend a pedal that doesn't work?

It did, but I'm thinking I just got a bad one. A mate of mine has one and has never had any problems with it. I should have explained that a bit better :).

ah, ok, fair enough.

I thought the engls give awesome metal tones at any volume level. (i own one).

But yeah, it's fair to say my practice volume is a little louder than bedroom practice.

The Keeleys do look good, but i'm afraid they are rather expensive - all coming in at least the price of what could be another BKP  8) .

Dunno about overdrive/distortion for metal tones (though I used to dig my old Boss HM-2) ....

But as for wahs, I think both yet basic stock Dunlop and Vox models sound perfectly OK.  I wouldn't go cheaper than them, at least, since they're reasonably solid kit and there are any number of mod specialists who can easily upgrade them for you with things like true bypass and stuff.  I recently got a stock Vox JH-1 wah, and it's just fine.  If I were buying a new Dunlop, eh, I'd try to shoot for the 535Q, but you can always get someone to mod a stock Crybaby to do basically the same thing later on down the road.  People argue about the tones on these all the time, and your individual mileage may vary, I suppose, but I think a lot of the reviews you can read on somewhere like HC are just posing (surprise! ;)).

Which is not to say that you can't get a better wah than a stock Dunlop or Vox!  I mean, I'd love to get a Teese Wizard Wah (if you hadn't guessed, I'm a bit of a wah junkie 8)), but that bit of budgeting is still a little ways down the road!  Still, you can probably get a stock wah hot-rodded to something like that spec by Stuart Castledine in the UK.

oh and my vox clyde McCoy is up for sale too   (not an original- the re-issue)....   i need the cash and like the Line 6 i hardly use it except for mucking about.... great pedal though....

i put this in the seconds out a while ago i'll bump it if you like

The hardest thing to do is to wait for what you want, but perhaps you'd be best served by saving up for a one-time purchase instead of spending 2x-3x in the long run.

I too have the Big D and agree with TO that it is an awesome pedal for most metal.  But to me the term "metal" has a different meaning
to each person and there are also a lot of different metal genres.  What are some bands your into?
The Big D for me can basically cover a lot of metal but to me not the balls to the walls heavy chugga chugga chugga metal.  The kind of metal
someone would want out of a Boss MT-2.  The Boss MT-2 is a great over the top balls to the wall metal, but has some harsh mids and to me is
not good in a "band" scenario.  If your just going to practice at home and want a real cheap pedal you can get off ebay go for the MT-2.  Its great
for that purpose and to me no pedal can come close for that kind of scenario.
Now if your looking for an MT-2 that does not have the harsh mids and is great in a "band" situation, I would recommend the Pro Tone Body Rot
# 2. It was just released and is a jump up from the Body Rot # 1.  I received a prototype from Dennis "the builder" and have to say it is a great balls to the walls chugga chugga chugga pedal.  "Please note: I also am equipped with a warpig"
Testing it I did notice that the volume knob needed adjusting since I have to be 3/4 the way up to be in unity with the amp volume.  Dennis is working on a fix.  But the distortion I get is amazing to me.  Great heavy distortion and single notes are perfect.  No mush like you will get with the MT-2 and it is quiet and true bypass.
Please also note:  If your a pedal peek and would have an issue with plastic input jacks do not buy this pedal.  They are the same that Analogman uses them in many of his pedals, but some people might have an issue anyway.  I find nothing wrong with them at all.  thanks!!
