Pedal board for 2017
« on: January 10, 2017, 02:40:37 PM »
This is the board I've been using at rehearsals; works a treat! The only thing I want to add to is is the favourite switch so I can switch between modulation and delay on the DECO. But otherwise, it works really well -- I keep the Horus on at all times for a very light break up tone, the Uberschall adds crunch and then the Boost for soloing. The Philosopher's Tone keeps the levels consistent between 'clean' and 'not clean'.

Few, but quality pedals. The Uberschall is for your metalriffs?
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Yes! The Horus, compressor and tape saturation stay on at all times so the only switching is on the Bogner and Lag deck on the DECO.

Whilst the Uberschall is certainly capable of full-on metal tones, I don't really use mine that that. I have mine set with the gain at about the 30% mark, which is a harmonically rich heavy crunch tone. I set the volume so that it's at unity gain, just adding crunch. I have the boost set for 3-4dB of gain, which is a very big volume jump going into a single channel amp.

I set my amp for edge of breakup and sculpt the final tone with the Horus; I use the Horus mostly to rein in the flab of a cranked valve amp, tighten things up, and add just a hint of growl and a bit of sparkle. (I am not concerned about low frequencies at all; that's the bass player's problem!) The Philospher's Tone adds sustain and squish and a touch of brightness as well. The DECO then adds a final stage of compression, tape saturation, darkens the tone considerably and adds a 'bump' from the tape re-emphasis circuit. (If you know how tape machines work, there are two circuits which mold the audio going before and after the tape heads which the DECO recreates)

The resultant tone is very smooth but when the Bogner is engaged, it has a very modded Marshall type of sound; very much in keeping with the Bogner tonality if you are familiar with it.

The modulation effects on the DECO are, hands down, the best I have ever heard. You can only have a maximum of two effects if you use the Favorites switch, but if you are looking for dead nuts replicas of tape chorus/flange/slap/echo, then the DECO should be at the very top of your audition list!

I will check the Bogner La Grange. I don't know how it will deal with my Orange RV50 MkI, which is a picky bar-steward when it comes to pedals. To push leads most tubescreamers do a good job and I'm getting fine results with the Suhr Riot too. Still, the La Grange sounds ace in video's, with a different flavour then the Orange-drivechannel.

After 3 months' rehearsal with this band, I have finalized my gig board. It went through several iterations but in the end, as nice as the other board sounded, it was just too much gain and was causing feedback issues ... if I have a large wattage amplifier with a tonne of clean headroom it would be able to take it, but as it stands, even at rehearsal using a Bruno Pony 50, it was pushing too much gain into the amplifier.

Sooo ... I had to have a rethink about the whole thing. In the end, I went back to using the MXR distortion +. It just sounds amazing when you are using it with a cranked amp. The BB Preamp is providing a bit of EQ shaping and is actually set very clean ... barely on the edge of breakup. But when you use it to push the front of the distortion + ... man, it comes alive quite gloriously!

The Philopsoher's Tone grabs the audio and evens out the level differences between clean and crunchy. The last pedal is the 1776 Multiplex. All 3 modes sound excellent, but for this project I am really liking the Binson setting; normally I don't dig it that much but it really sounds fab with the Strat and other pedals!

My favourite flanger there :) I think the dist+ sounds really good with a strat too. Still haven't got round to trying a BB Preamp, I have a feeling though it'd be up my street. Going to check out the 1776.

Looks like a well thought out board, very cool.

Here's my current board but, as always, will probably be tweaking it as 2017 progresses

Yes! There are more complex flangers, but I think the MXR just got it right the first time.

When you use a LP, the mids can get VERY pronounced, but it really adds meat to a Strat for sure.

Me too! What I love about the BB Preamp is that you can use it as an overdrive, but it can also be used as a clean boost, character boost, or EQ as well. As far as a straight OD goes, it's still my favourite, though I also love Klon style ODs as well.

This IS right up your street, gwEm, in probably every way! :)
a) It's a kit build
b) It models the Space Echo, Echoplex, and Binson EchoRec
