"War" is too broad a term. Why don't you tweak your breif? Some Wars bring societies together, instill feelings of patriotism and common ground. Some Wars divide and destroy societies. Alot of this depends on whether the war is fought overseas or on homeground. A governement can alienate itself from it's people when fighting abroad (Vietnam, Iraq, Falklands) where the local threat is minmal. This has a profound effect on society. A war fought on your doorstep will tend to unify the state. Safety in numbers and a natural instinct for protection under a leader.

In terms of advances in technology, it would be likely that the internet wouldn't have been possible until 2030 if it hadn't been for the two world wars and of course, not forgetting, the cold war. I guess that means we'd all be doing something more useful with our lives than posting comments in forums eh?!
"Look at the sustain on that!"

And what has it given us all this great technology? We're all craving for guitars made in '58 and NOS tubes made in '64, because of all the great new technology that wars have  presented us  :D

:D Computers, leading to micro chip tech. How many things do you own that have micro-chips ?
Aircraft, leading to aviation industries, & air travel.
Chemicals & there civilian usages.
Food & storage of food. development of tin cans & packaging materials.
Textiles industrys, Clothing developments durability etc.
Lubricants, development of oils & greases for use in industry, cars, aircraft, ships etc

Practiculy everything that you use in this day & age has been redeveloped & made better through the wars.

NO i`m not a fan of war, just a realist........
