Vibramate experiences?
« on: March 14, 2017, 09:54:22 PM »
Hey guys, since I'm planning on turning my LP Studio into my main Blues/Rock axe I've been thinking about installing a Bigsby on it, really got into the Black Keys lately and Dan Auerbach plays whammy equipped axes so I'd like to have one for covering songs. Now I did some research on Google and came across this goody:

http://www.vibramate.com/vibramate-v7-lp-install.php

Does anybody have any experience with those? Do they work and keep your axe in tune? Worst case I can buy it, try it and move the Bigsby and the Vibramate if I decide I don't like it, just wanted to ask if anyone around here has some mileage on this system.

Cheers!

There was lots of discussion of vibramate on here a few years ago - can't remember what we all said, though! I think there was at least one or two guys that got one. Mebbe do a search?

I never went for it, mainly because I was (and still am!) waiting for them to do one a vibramate for a Maestro Vibrola. They announced one as "coming soon", but the page isn't on the website anymore. I assume they couldn't get it to work (as in make it totally reliable in a reversible way like they have with the bigsby versions).

I heard very good things about the vibramate. I considered getting one for my explorer, but I really want a short Maestro on there.

If I wanted a Bigsby on any of my guitars (I don't really like the look), I'd very happily use a vibramate to install it.

Does it keep the axe in tune? Really you're asking about the Bigsby - the Vibramate is just a way of fitting one without drilling holes  - you're asking does a Bigsby stay in tune? I've heard stories either way. I think as long as it's set up OK, as long as your nut/bridge are cut well and don't pinch, then you should be fine.

From what I can tell besides having a good nut (TUSQ XL material also helps, as it is self-lubricated) roller saddles on the bridge are favoured with a Bigsby to keep it in tune.  Basically anything that reduces drag on the strings

Andy, my fault, yeah I meant does the Bigsby stay in tune. I know they are meant for subtle flutters along the lines of rockabilly riffs and I do have a Floyd Rose equipped axe for crazy whammy stuff as well my Strat that has your standard Fender style tremolo. I basically don't really need a Bigbsy, but I like the look and the feeling as well and the idea of being able to go back to the stock configuration anytime without leaving ugly holes in the guitar is very intriguing.

Did some more research on the subject, including here on the forum. Turns out on some axes it works well, on others the strap button is drilled too low (depending on neck angle of the instrument) to fit the Bigbsby with the Vibramate heightening it. Additionally some people reported some ugly circular marks left in the finish of the guitar from the vibramate felt pads, appears to be a problem on LPs with Nitro finish. My Studio has a matte finish that doesn't seem to be very durable, she looks very worn out anyway but still something to keep in mind. I guess I'll keep the idea somewhere in the back of my head and if I really decide to go for it I'll open up a new thread about it.

Dave: I heard only good things about the TUSQ nuts, on my Gibbo however I still have the stock plastic nut on, I took a pencil with a graphite tip, sharpened it and went through the slots a few times. I do it whenever I restring the guitar and I never had tuning problems ever since. Also there seems to be a lot of manufacturers and people with Bigsbys not using the roller saddles and they report perfect tuning stability. All that's left to do is to try I guess...

Don't know about the vibramate but I heard the Duesenberg les trem works really well. No first hand experience, but it seems to be a easier install too and completely reversible.

Johnny, that's amazing, thanks! Just checked out a few videos and this is not only a fraction of the price of the Bigsby + the Vibramate, it's just subtle enough for what I'm planning to do.

Cheers and thanks again!

I had a vibramate on my R8 for about a year. It works a treat but I rarely used it and a Bigsby adds a surprising amount of weight to an already heavy guitar. Plus string changing is far more annoying. Tuning stability wasn't too much of an issue though.

Doctor X: good to know. I'll go for the Les Trem and will open a thread about my impressions, but keep the Vibramate in the back of my head :)

Thanks again for the input everybody!
