Juggernaut or Aftermath
« on: July 24, 2017, 01:13:15 PM »
Hi, I'm currently debating whether to change the pickups in my Schecter Blackjack SLS 6 String (Mahogany Body, Maple Neck, Ebony Fingerboard), which is tuned to Standard D/Drop C. I'm currently using a Duncan SH-5 in the Bridge and a SH-2 in the Neck. I think they are alright, but I'm not madly in love with them. The SH-5 tends to get somewhat ice-picky on leads and I only really like the SH-2 on cleans. Ideally I'd like a Bridge Pickup with a heavy and tight rhythm sound, while also pulling of a nice searing lead tone without getting too ice-pickey. I'd mostly use the neck pickup for cleans and fatter leads.

Most of the time I'm playing stuff akin to "A Day To Remember" and "Four Year Strong" (blending Pop-Punk with some elements from heavier music), but I also like to dabble with modern metal from time to time. I know one of the guitarist of ADTR uses BKP Aftermaths in a 24.75" scale length and BKP Juggernauts in a Baritone Les Paul type. Link

I'm playing through a Series 2 Mesa Single Rectifier (6L6) and an Engl Standard 412/HB 212 V30 at the moment, although I'm also thinking about switching to another cabinet. Maybe a Mesa Traditional (Pretty expensive in europe) or a Diezel 412 FC/RC (pretty cheap used, only ever head good things about it)

How would you compare the Juggernaut set to the Aftermath set? Which one do you think is more suitable to the applications above? Do you think another set of pickups would suit me better? (I already tried the Ceramic Nailbomb set and the Painkiller set. I didn't like the former, it felt muddy combined with the rest of my gear. The latter one felt very abrasive, I was under the impression that it was a slightly different Duncan Distortion)

Cheers

Aftermath is not as abrassive as PK, but it's really tight and aggresive. Can get ice picky.

Juggernaut is really smooth on high end and not as aggresive, but still really tight. It seems to have this weird low mid quality to it though.

Aftermath (bridge), alnico Black hawk (set), holydiver (set)

Hmm.  The tone of the Juggernaut depends on the guitar and the amp, I think.  I had an experience with dark / phat tone and hollow mids where my Les Paul was brighter sounding with an A-Bomb in it.  Then I upgraded the terrible LFR bridge with a Schaller and all of the sudden, I have highs and mids as well as tight lows.  The Juggernaut is a great all around contemporary sounding metal pickup.  The set does great cleans, leads, and rhythm tones, with pretty much all levels of gain saturation.

Which one of these two would make a better pair for an LP tuned in Drop C#?

Based on what you said in the other thread, I'd say neither. Get a nailbomb or a black dog.
