HSS Strat Auto Split PRS Wiring Trick?
« on: August 28, 2017, 07:38:16 PM »
Hi all

After the great recommendation for a Crawler bridge pickup, I tried an interesting new wiring to further reduce the volume drop in the auto split position 2. (Middle and bridge split)

I read that PRS used a 2.2k resistor engaged when split on their humbuckers to reduce volume loss. Wired it up on the auto split and it bloody works. No volume drop. Just as loud as the neck/middle.

However these things never run smooth

I'm sure the sound of the Crawler humbucker has now changed and I'm wondering why. Surely the Crawler isn't being affected by the resistor? But I've gone for a full mid rangey bucket to a slightly more tele sound. Does anyone know what this could be? Phasing? The resistor? I'm so close so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

In that PRS wiring the split line (in the BKP wiring green + white) is not wired directly to ground for the split but through a 2.2k resistor. In humbucking mode this connection is not connected to anything so it should not make a difference whether you use the resistor or not.

I have used this wiring on several guitars/pickups and have never noticed a change in the humbucking tone. I also have not noticed an increase in volume of the split mode. What I did notice was that any harsh highs, especially when used under gain, disappeared and that the guitar feels better to play under that condition. I would double check the wiring.

Good luck
