Strat pickup for Abraxas HSH combo
« on: November 05, 2017, 02:34:33 AM »
I'm trying to find a middle Strat pickup, preferably noiseless, that will go with an Abraxas set in an HSH setup. Wiring will be a regular 5-position style, with push-push switches for coil splits on the humbuckers, and another switch to make position 3 either middle pickup on its own or bridge+neck, Les Paul/Tele style.

I can't find any info on the impedances of the Abraxas when they are split, and there's a big difference between the bridge and neck, so I'm not sure how hot the middle pickup should be so that it will work OK in both combinations.

I will probably use positions 2 & 4 with the humbuckers split, going for a Strat-ish sound (not expecting it to be too genuine, but want a reasonable impersonation), so not necessarily looking for something as hot as the Abraxas in humbucker mode. Although I may want to use it on its own, so prefer noiseless, since all my other single coil guitars are noiseless.

I'm a fan of both Kinman and Bill Lawrence (aka Wilde) noiseless Strat pickups, but open to suggestions.

BKP's are relatively quiet. I would recommend an IT. I have one in the middle paired with (a splitted) Crawler. Great F-quack and quite balanced. Abraxas would not be that far away from a Crawler.

Thanks. They're not noiseless, but since I'll mostly be using them in positions 2 and 4 it's probably not a problem (who really uses the middle pickup on its own anyway?).

A followup question - should it still be RWRP in a HSH configuration? I believe that the slug coils in a humbucker will be hum cancelling with a standard middle pickup, but I'm reading conflicting things. Can anyone here point me to a definitive article that explains it all?

I have a HSS-wiring and the middle singlecoil is RWRP. I would just try that in a HSH-configuration. BKP has an excellent returnpolicy in case it doesn't work fine. You can throw a mail at the BKP-team. They have way more knowledge about this than I have.

Besides that, if your guitar is shielded properly the BKP-singles are quiet. I just gave my middle IT a shot and I have no to very little hiss, even at frightening volumes. Actually this pickup sounds standalone quite good too.
