So I was making a sandwich.... (oh, woe is me).
« on: April 15, 2006, 01:46:45 AM »
...when for some reason the knife slips. Now this is a very sharp knife... next thing I know I am looking down to see a chunk of left hand index finger hanging off, below the first knuckle and above the nail.

First thoughts are along the lines of "if there is tendon or nerve damage then I can see a shed load of guitars and amps on eBay...".

Thankfully, several stitches later it revealed there is no lasting damage, I will just have yet another interesting scar to add to my collection, although I will not be able to play properly for several weeks (although a few people might take exception at the use of the word 'properly' to describe my playing...).

The annoying thing is, I just got a PRS McCarty today and a Custom 24 is arriving in a week or so's time yet I won't reallly be able to play them.

Still, at least they are nice to look at!

I knew what was coming when I saw the thread title. I thought that kind of thing only happened to me. Mrs 38th & I share the cooking duties and I am constantly exposed to sharp knives-normally I am ok unless I have a gig-in which case I am sure to cut myself!

Ouch!  Been there and done that, too.  :?  I cut all the way to the bone on my right hand little finger and had to have micro-surgery to fix the tendon, though it's never come back to full strength.  What really sucked was those twitches you get in your sleep.  Man, they wake you up fast when your tendon is still healing.

I snapped the tendon in my left hand little finger too, playing sports.  Couldn't straighten it for my whole high school life.

Hey, if it's just one finger, can't you use the other fingers and play a bit?

That's exactly what I have been doing - although it's difficult to derive the same pleasure when you can't really play the licks you want!

I've just used the last week as an excuse to strengthen my over three fingers and playing open position chords.

Micro surgery.... now there is something I would not like to have gone through. My Mother had micro surgery on her little finger about 15 years ago, even today it's still not right. However, glad to hear that it's not stopped you from playing. If you are anything like me, the thought of being kept away from my guitars is not one I can easily comprehend!

I cut the inside of my left thumb open with a brand new stanley knife last summer - that was nasty seeing the grey fat tissue hanging out.

I've also stuck a thin screwdriver into my 1st finger (left hand again) when changing some machineheads on a mate's guitar (ouch!!!)

Hope your finger heals soon mate.

tune em to open G, add a string dampener and practice right hand tapping =P

you still have 3 useful fingers on the other hand, time to give the pinky a workout

Sounds nasty! Well at least there won't be any permanent damage. It always seems to happen when you get some new gear too. That's 3 people in here who have injured themselves when they get a new bit of gear!

my old guitar tutor was trying to seperate 2 frozen burgers with a huge kitchen knife and slipped straight through his hand, luckily missed everything important but he's got a scar either side of his hand were it went straight through.

I had to read it twice to get it, seems the knife went right through.

Here is an artists impression.

HAHA!!!!

oh right i get it.... i was thinking he sliced right through his hand... ?!?!!

but i see- its like he stabbed himself.... ahhhhhh

cause you see the original knife incident of this thread was a slicing action.... i missed the transition to a thrusting, stabbing motion- my mistake...

I'm sure it's not good when you miss the transition to a thrusting motion.
