Need some HB's for very specific sound/guitar
« on: April 15, 2006, 10:56:32 AM »
Hi all..

First posting....

I have just bought this '78 all walnut Gibson The Paul.
Yes....that's correct....alle walnut. The fretboard is ebony.

Looking for a PAF-style PU with more output and more good lows and
lots of dynamics. Good coil tapped sound is a must too.
I play oldschool rock and use a fair amount of gain. No real matal though.
And somtimes need a single coil sound.

Any recommendations?

+1, mules are great in LPs.

Also, nice guitar although I dont like the positioning of the switch too much, the grain is so nice

Mules, again! Very dynamic and coil tap pretty well. I don't think you'll ever get a true single-coil sound from a tapped humbucker (something to do with them using different magnets if I remember correctly), but the Mules do a decent job tapped.

Interestingly (or not, depending on your point of view  :D ) I've also got an option to use my Mules wired in parallel. The sound isn't nearly as good as the true coil tap - lacks the top-end sweetness.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies....

To be honest....I was more thinking of a Vintage Hot HB set.
Like the Blackdog, Emerald or VHII.

Like I said.....the sound I'm looking for is PAF with more output and
stronger lows. Oh yeah.... and a nice Coil Tapped sound.

So your recommendation on the Mule suprised me!

Care to eleborate?

Yeah, forgot to say how much I like that LP - mmm, walnut.

Like Sambo, I find a good slab of raw wood on a guitar kind of, well ... erotic.

I'd call the Mules "vintage hot". I suppose it just depends how hot you're expecting them to be. Tim gigs with the Mules and plays metal with them, so they should have enough output for what you need, unless you're after the modern scooped sound.

HAHA!

yer from what ive heard (not sound- heard as in other people say... well other people type any way  :? ) mules would fit the bill... if not then im not sure.... strong lows wouldnt really be black dogs or emeralds (i dont think anyway....) but having said that most people say all BKPs have good lows n everything else! so i dunno really lol...

i get lost in pup questions cause i spit out all this stuff ive got from hearsay that i dont actually know...

ignore me

wire the coil tap up as a variable coil split using the tone pot - you can then dial in the amount of coil split.  LOTS of tones available from this setup.

I'm actually voting for VHII's,  they have a bit more bottom end in them and will push a bit more.  I have them in a PRS and they sound great in the split positions too.
So many pickups, so little time

Having recommended the Mules (and I still do), it's well worth listening to Phil - he's got more BKPs than BKP have.

Probably your best option is to phone Tim and tell him exactly what you want. If he doesn't make a pickup that suits you, he'll modify an existing one to your tastes.

VH II for a bit more power and thumping bass.
Mule for a bit more richness in the mids.

Have you thought of an Abraxas? It's a vintage sounding pickup, hotter than the Mule but has a reputation for having a similar character but, like I said, it's hotter.
