New pickups for my McCarty 594
« on: July 11, 2018, 10:46:33 PM »
Hi Guys,

Im after as set of pickups for my 594 as the 58/15 lt that are in there are to vintage/low output for my liking.

I want something that can keep up with my Tremonti but maybe a little more versatile with good split tones.

The guitar is my Standard/Drop D guitar and mainly play Tool, Alterbridge/Creed, Alice in chains type stuff. With the occasional Lamb of God thrown in.

The neck will be mainly used for cleans and I really like a big fat neck clean tone like the Tremonti neck which isn’t that high output only about 8k but the bridge needs to be quite hot and chunky but clean up well with the volume knob.

I was thinking maybe a Nailbomb for the bridge but not sure what to go for in the neck. I’ve had cold sweat neck pickups before and liked them but I’m thinking maybe something with less output?

Any ideas?

The amp is an EVH 50w 5150III btw

Thanks!

I see you've got a few BKPs already

Maybe the Holy Diver bridge?  The A-Bomb would probably be good too though.
With the Nailbomb or Holy Diver a VHII neck would probably work well, or maybe an Emerald.

I haven’t actually got a any BKPs atm as I sold the guitars I had them in. I had a Nailbomb/cold sweat in a Mayones Regius and really liked it apart from it was lacking a little low end but I think the McCarty is a warmer guitar. The cold sweat was a bit clinical maybe but again that might have been the guitar but something a little more open for cleans.

I too have a PRS Tremonti. While I haven't played one, people seem to say the Painkiller sounds the closest to the PRS Tremonti treble pickup, so that could be worth looking into if you want something tonally similar. But, I think Dave's suggestion of the Holy Diver might be right on. The Holy Diver is hot enough to keep up with the Tremonti Treble, but it is tonally different. It has more low end and is definitely fatter. The Holy Diver could cover Tool and Alice in Chains better than the Tremonti. For the neck, the Emerald is a classic pairing. It is more vintage voiced and very fat and fluid sounding, great for solos.
