Do I want a Miracle Man?
« on: August 11, 2018, 01:20:09 PM »
I currently have a Cold Sweat set installed in my Fender Showmaster superstrat. The guitar has a basswood body with maple set-neck and rosewood fret-board. The guitar also has a floating trem - the net result is that the guitar has quite a soft sound with very little going on in the low and high frequencies, and so needs a scooped pick-up with a fast attack to counter this. The CS neck is great and the bridge is also fine but I can't help but wonder what a Miracle Man would sound like in the bridge? Although the CS bridge is fine I would probably like something with tiny bit more mid action  and maybe a little more power - is this a Miracle Man?

The guitar also has quite a heavy, brass alloy floating term. The net result is that the guitar has very little going on in the low and high frequencies and so needs a scooped pick up with a fast attack to cancel this. I think the MM would serve want you want. It has good mids, but they might be not that apparent as the bass is quite huge. It's definitely less scooped than the CS.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I replaced a CS with a MM in the bridge position of my SG and the result was pretty much what you are looking for.  Similar but bigger, beefier.

Did you keep the CS neck and if so, how does it pair up with the MM bridge?

I hope that I can help a little, as I have both Cold Sweat bridge and Miracle Man  (actually Miracle Man is my favorite pickup and have  2 of them in two guitars), but anyway...

In my opinion Miracle Man is a metal pickup but not extreme one and not super modern but still..., when Cold Sweat shines more in rock/hard rock territory being more versatile I think.
Cold Sweat is definitely more polite, tamed has better string separation and better cleans. Both good at leads and both great rhythm pickups while Miracle Man is hotter, more aggressive and bigger. Some people call Cold Sweat bridge as 'screamer' on this forum but maybe it`s my setup maybe guitar but my Cold Sweat is rather polite, tamed and 'polished' sounding.

I also have Miracle Man neck and suprisingly it`s really good neck pickup, it reminds me a lot of Zakk Wylde neck tone (for some reason neck model in my opinion is closer to Zakk`s sound than a bridge...)
I`m familiar with Cold Sweat neck too, as I have it in another guitar (paired with CBomb) and think that CS neck will work perfectly with MM bridge.

Summing up if I would want more 'classic', more versatile and more polite sounding pickup which shines in rock/hard rock territory I would go for CS, metal ect definitely Miracle Man
but... I would have to be left with only one pickup I would definitely choose Miracle Man.

Best Regards,

Yes I kept it and it pairs nicely but the pickup heights do have to be adjusted a little to get the same balance as the MM has more output than the CS bridge

Best Regards,

Thanks - your comments on the Miracle Man, although positive, are also what I was worried about. I like the Cold Sweats "air" in the same way that I like the Nail Bomb's raspy hairyness and I think that I will find the MM to be too metal - I've already tried a set of Holy Divers and removed them for that reason. The Cold Sweat is almost there but I'm just missing the mids a little bit. In another guitar (ESP Eclipse) I've got an A Bomb set and that nails the tone that I'm after and trying to recreate in this guitar, the problem I have is that this guitar has no top end, no bottom end and a really soft attack which means that what sounds good in one guitar sounds awful in this. It's one of those pain-in-the-butt guitars that I've never really been happy with, which is a shame because it plays really well and despite having a floating trem will stay in perfect tune.

Thanks - as with Lucas' comments, although the general tone of what you're saying is positive, the suggestion that the MM bridge is significantly higher output than the CS worries me. I don't mind a little more power but if it's going to be significantly more than my other pickups (Crawler and A-Bomb) then that could start causing me problems.

Probably the closest thing in the BKP to a CS bridge with more mids would be a VHII bridge.  You might find that the CS neck needs to be dropped slightly though to compensate.
