Alnico Nailbomb in a PRS SC245?
« on: November 13, 2018, 08:31:35 PM »
I have a beautiful PRS SC245 that I bought used earlier this year. The neck has a PRS 58/15 pickup which sounds incredible, but the bridge has some unidentified pickup. It's pretty hot but the clean sound is terrible. I'm not sure why the prior user took out the original 58/15 in the bridge. Anyway I'm strongly considering the Alnico Nailbomb for bridge. I'd love to hear how others have experienced it in a singlecut, particularly a PRS. I play mostly heavy rock in the style of bands like Chevelle and Sevendust, occasionally doing some modern metal chugging stuff. I probably play more clean on the neck than the bridge, but I do want to have a decent clean tone from the bridge for certain sections in songs. Also, is there anything I should be aware of with combining a BKP bridge with a PRS neck pickup? Will they play nice together? Any thoughts are appreciated!

A-Bomb is a warm sounding pickup with a wide frequency range.  It has highs, mids, and bass, but the mids are hairy and quite saturated.  It's a very gnarly, aggressive, and super fun pickup.  It didn't do leads so well with a Dual Rectifier, but with my ReVv Generator 120, this doesn't seem to be a problem at all.  It has a decent clean.  Juggernaut is WAY better for bridge cleans but it is a really dark and phat sounding pickup with a diffuse top end.

Thanks Yellowjacket, that is helpful. I'm looking forward to hearing this tone! Will report back on how it does in the SC.

I have an Abraxas bridge in my SC245 and for me it's a perfect match. Hot but keeping this paffy sound, adding a bit of britghness but not harsh at all, very balanced sound. Sounds amazing both clean and overdriven configuration, it's hot enough to play metal with it, but it's not a modern pickup and of course not the hottest in the bkp catalog. I have a Rebel Yell in a Les Paul Standard, and my guess is that it would sound great on my PRS too. Maybe some day I'll try to switch pickups between this two just to check.  If you want something a bit hotter and modern, perhaps you should give them a look.

Before I installed the Abraxas in the PRS, I tried a ceramic Warpig that came to my hands, and it was way too bassy, scooped and "massive" for my taste.

If I had that guitar I put Mules in it. Kravitz uses Mules too. They handle (loads of) gain well.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.
