Another amp/OD question!
« on: April 23, 2006, 07:46:28 PM »
OK so ive talked to alot of you and ive settled on the LC15R for a tube amp. Problem is, im wondering what OD pedal id need to get either a Rob Zombie chunky crunch, or a children of bodom sound? I also play Shadows fall/ Lamb of god type stuff. Im more concerned about the first two tho :P . I was wondering, what kinda OD pedal would i need to get the same distortion my Uber metal gives me? Ive heard it would be a terrible waste putting a distortion pedal infront of a tube amp, so im open for suggestions.

Cheers

If you have the $$££$$ you cant go wrong with a HBE Big D - it gives you all the range from TS808 OD to Metal - and it comes in a chunky metal box.....
BKPS: Milks, P90s, Apaches, Mississippi Queens, Mules, PG Blues, BG FP 50s, e.60s strat custom set

Doesnt Vai use a DS1 for boosting his amp? Maybe look at a Maxon OD9 aswell, I think the nailbomb clip in the Players section uses this to boost the Marshall overdrive, sounds so good

Ah right thats cool. The Big D really looks and sounds like it could be what im after. Is it really sacreligious to stick a distortion pedal infront of a tube amp then? Would that completely put me back to square one with quality, or will it still sound better than SS but not as good as overdriven?

I looked into equipment setups of my fav bands, and Opeth run pedalboard distortion through their tube amps rather than the amp distortion?

Thanks

i think distortion thru a valve amp is okay as long as you don't go crazy with the gain...sometimes its difficult  lots of artists do this - bear in mind most people in this forum care more about their tone than a lot of famous artists (who would all have BKPs if they were serious about tone)

ah right cheers Indy. Ill probly get the amp and run my uber metal through it until i accumulate more funds. Then ill prob take it into a local music shop and try some OD's through it and see what to do after that.

Cheers guys

What alot of players do (myself included) is to use an Overdrive pedal (or a Distortion pedal with low-ish gain) on a Distorted amp channel.

I find it adds more harmonics to the sound.

Give it a go, you may like the results :)

Hmmm, some distortion from my pedal mixed with some amp distortion sounds like quite an idea, but im still real iffy about this LC15R  :( . I had pretty much made up my mind, but ive read a load of reviews, and all the blues / mellow rock players rate it highly. Not sure if id get the tones id really want. The stupid little "ampicons" on laneys site say you can crank it for metal but im a little sceptical :P . Im not one for trusting small cartoon faces with constipated grins   . However if i went for the ashdown fallen angel 40 watt, not sure what i'd do about upgrading to a cab. Im pretty sure theres no stereo output to connect to cabs so i guess id have to get another head and cab. Which i realy dont wanna do!

Sorry for pissing everyone around just this decision is bloody hard. My cash flow is low to say the least, im only 17. But i really need to upgrade from my marshall 15w solid state to something with a little more power and tone.

Again, input greatly appreciated.
Thanks guys

As another Big D owner, I can tell you from experience, that it will do just about anything you want: clean boost, mild overdrive, screaming distortion. It is essentially 15 overdrives in one box!!

ah yea, TO that was ur review on harmony central right? soundss awesome, but just thinkin for the price of a LC15R + Big D, i could get a fallen angel 40 watt?

Ah this stuff is bloody confusing    :(
Considering i only get like 100 to spend on equipment a month, the decision is bloody tough.

Need to get sellin on ebay lol
