I would like to change out the Kent Armstrong HPAO-PE brigde humbucker and the STH-1 neck single coil on this guitar. You can pull up the tone knob and turn the humbucker into a single coil. They are okay for what they are, but I want a cleaner sound when I plug in directly without pedals. The body is mahagony, maple neck with rosewood board. The neck pickup is fairly low.. 10mm from the strings and its at its highest position. So I want a clean bright sound from the silgle coils and a fat tone from the humbucker setting and hopefully just be able to desolder the KA's and just plug in the Bareknuckles. So I would like some advice which pickups to purchase.

Depends what sort of sound you're after and what music you play.

I replaced the Kent Armstrong HPAO-PEs in my Eggle Berlin with BKP Mules. They're good all-rounders and make an excellent replacement for the KAs - much fatter and clearer. The KAs always sounded a bit harsh and brittle to me.

Looking at the HSS page (http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/Z-HSS.html) and judging from the soundclips I've heard, the Mothers Milk single coils might go well with a bridge Mule.

One thing you'll have to look out for is that the colour coding of the wires is different between KAs and BKPs (and every other manufacturer). The BKPs are described in the leaflet you get with the pickups, and the KA colour coding can be found here:

Froglord, Thank you for your advice. I'll use your recommendations to start off from and listen to the sound clips. Basically I wanted to get rid of the harsh and brittle sound you've heard. I want a clean bridge tone as well as the fat humbucker sound. We are playing a mixture of country (twang) to rock and roll, also a bit of jazz. Maintain the voice of the guitar as well. Use pedals to change the tone if I wanted. Again thanks I appreciate it.

Mules sound just what you want, or if you want less output than that, Stormy Mondays. They are definately fat, but have enough highs and mids not to sound too bassy or scooped. Definately not muddy. As for the cleans, well its not my favourite tone on the bridge pickup as I've never really liked bridge humbuckers for clean.. but the LP middle and neck switch settings are AMAZING for clean. They sound so good through a crunchy, just breaking up valve amp :D

Tom, Thank you for input. The New York just has a bridge humbucker and a single coil neck. You pull the tone knob and turn the humbucker into a single coil. I don't really care for the overly bright single coil bridge tone because I think it hurts one's teeth, but I usually mix it with the neck single coil to cut the brightness. Kind regards!

The pulling up on the tone knob, is a coil tap...you need to make sure you order with 4 conductor wire, and you can get that with your BK's.

Apologies if I am stating the obvious, I wasn't sure from your posts if you were aware that coil taps are available for all humbucker pickups! :D

Willo... Thank you for the right term and the advice. I was trying to find a sound sample for The Mules,Stormy Monday, George Whitehorn, Mother's Milk and Apache on a mahogany body with a rosewood board. Also where can I find the the dimensions on the pickups or are these standard pickup sizes. Wonderful sound clips.

Hey, well I think the humbuckers come in two sizes: 50mm or 52mm spacing. I think singlecoils are all a uniform size.

I'm not certain on this - maybe it will be best to email one of the guys at BK to help you. There is a way to measure the spacing, but without being absolutely certain I don't want to say what that is - in case it's dodgy info!

I have a VHII in a mahogany LP with maple cap & ebony fretboard, plus a Mothers Milk & Crawler set in an alder body, rosewood board strat, if you want any opinions?

I'd like your opinions on the Mothers Milk & Crawler or at least the combination... I may be set on the crawlers in the bridge position, and I may be leaning toward the apache in the neck position, at least after listening to some sound samples. The New York has a small body and I've heard this causes the pickups to sound more top heavy. Anyway I am interested in your opinions.

Hey, well IMO the combination works very well indeed. I know that it's a commonly recommended setup from Tim, so I guess he thinks it works well too, although you may be wanting something different!

Reading your earlier thread, it seems like your guitar has one humbucker and one singlecoil? My strat has HSS formation, which may also make the set seem to balance better, if you see what I mean, - the difference between the neck Mothers Milk and bridge Crawler is tempered by the middle Mothers Milk singlecoil, if that makes sense?

After playing with my amp cranked today, I'd definately get a Mule for the bridge position of your guitar, sounds soo good through a nice amp :D

Yes, it has a humbucker at the bridge and a single coil at the neck. I think the newer New Yorks have the 5 way switch and HSS configuration. This is one of the earlier one and your choices are: Humbucker only, neck single coil only, single coil at bridge only (coil tapped) and finally the bridge and neck single coils combined. I assume if the small mahagony body on this model tends to be top heavy than I would need a darker sounding humbucker but not muddy. I have a Roland JC-77 for sterile clean tone... more for that chorus... Music Man 210-65 or the Fender Champ 12 red knob. I use the Music Man more than the two since it has the best sound of the bunch. I do love the sound samples of the Crawler, both clean and dirty. I guess its a toss up with the Mule. Tom, do you have sound samples of the mule someplace.. in clean and dirty.

Okay.. I want you thank you guys for helping out in pointing me in the right direction. Its made it a lot easier and clearer in looking at the choices here. I'll be making an order soon once I decide which way to go and if my choice turns out to be a dud.. throw them out and start over. But, it seems any choice is the right choice but a matter of taste. At least this is what I've come to realize in reading most of the threads. The sound bytes are awesome. Again, than you.. and play it loud!!
