Recommendations for some brutal stuff.
« on: June 13, 2020, 06:15:08 PM »
So I'm in a bit of a pickle. I recently got my Mayones Hydra BL6 which comes with SD Nazgul/Sentient combo, and I just don't get on with them at all.
So I'm looking to replace them down the line, but I don't know what with.

I'm thinking:
C-Nailbomb + Cold Sweat
C-Nailbomb + VHII
C-Warpig + VHII
Ragnarok + VHII

Any suggestions?
I like the brutal metal stuff, but I appreciate and want a nice clean in the neck haha.

I'll be using mainly either a Mark V, 6505 or EVH 5150 LBX II.

Guitar is a 2-piece Black Limba body, with a Wenge and Purpleheart bolt on neck.

Beautiful axes, mate.

I tried the combos you said (except for the ragnarok which I'm very curious about) and I prefer the warpig, though it is very dark and I don't know if that would be overkill in your limba guitar. It could work if you have a very trebble oriented amp like mine (5153) but I dunno. Juggernauts work perfect for me, I also love brutality to death, but I favor versatility as well.

Maybe the safest bet for you, apart from the Rags, are the Painkillers

What don't you like about your current pickups?

Out of the ones I have my favourites are the Black Hawks, with the alnico bridge magnet

If your guitar is bright you might want to look at some of the tighter alnico based models, like the A-Hawk, Impulse, Holy Diver, or Juggernaut (which has a hybrid alnico/ceramic bridge pickup).  Out of these the A-Hawk and Impulse would be tightest.  The Impulse is based on the A-Hawk but has less mids and output.

The ceramic Black Hawk is also a great pickup but be careful of any of the ceramic pickups if your guitar is bright, especially if you play much in terms of leads or cleans on the bridge and middle pickup positions.

From an older BKP-thread:

I've just had an email from Tim ( I asked him the same question) this is what he said:

"spalted maple and limba is going to produce quite a hard mid range so I wouldn't suggest going too hot with this set.The trick to getting this combo of tone woods to work is going for lower output, more dynamic humbuckers. I'm going to suggest Riff Raff humbuckers-plenty of bite to drive all that maple(which isn't as bright as everyone says!), great crunch tones and good cleans too. You'll get a much more responsive guitar by going this route and you'll be surprised at how much gain you can heap onto the cleaner tone for the heavier material".
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.
