You know when there's an itch you've just got to scratch? It can only mean two things... a trip to the sexual heath clinic... or a new Bare Knuckle Pickup.

So, I play a Washburn N4 (alder body, ebony board). I really do like the Bill Lawrence L500 pickup (ceramic blade thing), but I just have in insatiable thirst to find the BKP equivalent or I guess a kind of 'enhanced' Bill Lawrence.

There's the Black Hawk which I guess looks the part but I also hear good things about the Cold Sweat and Aftermath. It's those classic Nuno Bettencourt  percussive, edgy tones I'm after... I know that's what the Bill Lawrence delivers but just keen to experiment!

Would love hear some suggestions from the forum!

Thanks in advance!

L500 or L500XL? I think the L500 is close to a Cold Sweat and the XL in the ballpark of a Painkiller. Maybe Eric can enlighten us about that.

Thanks for recommendations Telerocker. Good question, there is much folklore around this topic in terms what Nuno actually uses (!) but I'm pretty confident that my pickup is Bill Lawrence USA L500.

    • Get our album here (alnico Black Hawks)
The ceramic version of the Black Hawk is quite percussive.  The alnico version less so, but it has a great low mids purr.  The neck pickup is phenomenal.

I think the Cold Sweat gets in this territory really well
Kinda Ty Tabor/Nuno/Dimebag focused lead tone, with punchy lows and twangy top
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat
