Tele / P90 combo for Schecter PT Special
« on: December 28, 2020, 07:48:29 AM »
I'm looking at getting one of these Schecter PT Specials.

Telecaster design, swamp ash body, maple neck, rosewood fretboard.  Regular telecaster style bridge pickup with a P-90 in the neck position.

Here's a video:

I don't play country (I wouldn't know where to start) but rather I am mainly a metal player who is looking for something a bit different, maybe play some shoegaze, funk, classic rock or jazz with it.   I'd like it to be able to handle heavy stuff as well, and work well with a fuzz pedal when required.

The two bridge pickups I am considering are the Flat '50 and the Cobra-T.  Each obviously has its advantages and disadvantages, I'm wondering about the range of each.

In terms of neck pickups I am think that if I go with the Flat '50 the choices would be a Half Note or a Blue Note, and if a Cobra-T the Supermassive.

My amp is a Peavey JSX 120W through a closed-back 412 with Celestion V30s and H75 Creambacks in an x-pattern.  I don't usually run a boost on the Clean channel, I usually run an MXR/CAE MC401 on the Crunch channel, and an MXR M77 on the Ultra channel.  Everything is controlled by a Boss MS-3 and I also use its internal effects in the effects loop of the JSX.

My main thing is doom metal and I am looking for something that can do different stuff but if the range of this guitar extends to that stuff it would be a bonus.  A fairly tight bottom end would be good.  I'm used to Black Hawks and Impulses in Schecter super strats, and a Miracle Man in an SG

I'm hoping someone with knowledge of Telecasters with P-90s can shed some light on this.

Dave, it is a matter of preference, but the JSX has so much gain on tap that I would let the guitar breathe a bit more with lower to medium output. My suggestion would be a Flat 50 and a Nantucket neck. Will be raw and raunchy with a good balance and dynamics. But if it has to do metal as well, then the Cobra.

Funny, last night I watched a few Schecter reviews. The PT's are very nice and well made guitars. I like the Ultra III and the Nick Johnston cheaper version as well.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I just wonder about the range on the Cobra.  I don't need twang but some funky tones and nice cleans would be good.

The JSX has an amazing clean channel so I am not too worried about running out of headroom there.  I can even get nice cleans with Black Hawks and the Miracle Man through that channel.  It is basically a Classic 50 clean channel but with a quad of 6L6GC tubes for a 120W power section, so no real chance of power amp distortion when trying to get nice cleans, unlike the Classic 30

I guess I am wondering about the Supermassive neck as a match with the Cobra-T.

I know that the the Blue Note neck matches well with the Flat 50, I've seen that combo in a video and it sounded like a good match. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbntDWg6Trw

I donít have any experience with the Cobra T, but have had a set of Cobras in my strat and they are fat and powerful, I loved them for what I needed at the time but they have a real humbucker vibe about them. Wonder whether a Piledriver would suit you better, I found that to be pretty versatile in my Tele.
