..doesnt actually sound too bad for a cheap stock one! Recorded this clip as i was quite pleased with the sound, if I get BK's I'll want something like this but a bit punchier and knopfler-ish, so any recommendations would be good, although I wont be able to afford for some time.. What type of Strat is it? Your playing sounds great 8)

I'm thinking about changing out the stock pickups in my 2004 Fender American Standard Strat, maybe for some Sultans. Mine currently measure 6.11 neck, 5.87 middle and 7.23 bridge. I wouldn't change the gain of them at all, just maybe soften the tone a bit and get closer to those big clean sounds I hear on Dire Straits records, but also be able to get powerful slightly dirty sounds like some of the Rolling Stones stuff.

sounds wicked tom except the rhythm stuff keeps distorting on the emphasised notes for me... :?

my personal view is that you should sell the strat and get a p-90 equipped axe... 8)

Great Tom- does sound good. Personally I'd go for Apaches but then I would say that wouldn't I.

Yeah well.. its the JCM800 patch on my V-amp, with the gain on 1, but I cant really notice any clipping through my speakers except towards the end.. Anyway.. I'm thinking about getting a neck MQ for my LP as I'm starting to lean towards the singlecoil type sound, I love the percussive attack (is that the right terms?!).. I dunno, when I play with singles I just feel more "in the music" I cant even describe it haha, humbuckers dont seem as interactive sometimes. Bainzy it is a "Jim Harley" strat copy I bought about 5 years ago when I first started playing.. 38th, the Apaches seem cool but personally I want a higher output than that, basically similar to the tone of these pickups but obviously clearer with the scatterwinding, and more punch and liveliness.

Yes! I swear that something just seems to be missing from humbuckers, and I don't mean the 60-cycle hum. Noiseless single coils are worse though. At least humbuckers have a fat sound.

I dunno how many RG and LP players I've tried to explain this to, but they just don't hear it.

haha yeah, I still love bridge humbuckers though, I think I just prefer the attack of singles in the neck.. somehow they "feel" squishier and weaker, and when you hit hard they "give" .. strange defenition maybe but its the only way I can describe it.. really gassing for a MQ neck right now!

Tom, I know what you mean however I played a gig saturday night where we played very loud-certainly the loudest this band has ever played( I had "cymbal ear" for hours after) and The Apaches came through it all I can assure you ( as did the Country Boys for that matter). In fact, a punter was talking to me afterwards and asked about my battered old Strat. What I am saying is that they are not lacking and I have played Strats for years.To me, as I have said before, just what a Strat should sound like. After talking to Tim and hearing Steve's Slowhand clips I might get myself some SH's for my blue Start but that is because I want a slightly darker flavour.I was was pressed I'd go for Apache anyday.Welcome to the realm of the single coil matey.

Well I dont really know yet, I dont have enough money for anything. I just prefer the Mark Knopfler tone (especially on Tunnel of Love) to the Hank Marvin/other surf guitar type tones so I thought I'd prefer something with a bit more drive, but I might go to Music Live this year (if BK will be there) to try some different strat pickups out :D
