Baritone vs tuned down regular guitar
« on: August 30, 2022, 05:46:59 AM »
What are the differences in feel, tone, versatility and capabilities? Does a baritone with a capo at C do the same thing as regular guitar tuned down to C standard? Is there any point in having a guitar tuned to C standard if you plan on getting a baritone?

I'm asking because I'm on the fence about keeping an Explorer. If I put better parts on it, BKP obviously, and tune it down, can a baritone cover that ground? Assuming all things being equal except for scale length.

I'm not sure about versatility or capabilities, but the feel of a longer scale length starts to drift towards a short scale bass (a little).  Usually baritone guitars are strung with considerably thicker strings (at least all the ones I've seen are) and those two things will certainty give the notes a different timbre.  An example of someone who prefers to tune down instead of using a baritone is Ariel Posen.  He likes the feel of a 25.5" scale with burly strings better than more scale length.  Ultimately though it's what feels/sounds best for you.  Experiments with guitars can get expensive, but they can also be really fun and informative.  I hope the day finds you well.
