Hi guys...this may sound abit naive, but what are the differences in acoustic guitar styles?

E.g Grand auditorium, Jumbo.........................................................................................................................................................................................(and so on)

size and volume  :D   Also bass - Dreadnoughts have more bass than Parlours - which is why fingerstylists often go for smaller guitars as the bass can be out of control for fingerstyle.

So is a grand auditorium slightly smaller than dreadnaughts? OI heard that although the width is the same, the middle of the grand auditoriums is slightly narrower, resulting in a bit more treble, therefroe improving indiviual string clarity...

Dreads are the most common size and favoured by anyone who likes to strum or use a pick.  You can successfully fingerpick on them (see Tommy Emmanuel sometime), but it's harder to get the notes to balance well.  You need a thumbpick, some callouses, and more practice.  For fingerpicking OM-sized acoustics are pretty good, I've found.  They don't sound quite as full and rich as a dreadnought, but they're close, if you get a good one.

Jumbos are mostly used by country-and-western strummers.  They have a bigger sound than a dread, but I don't think they sound as nice overall--bit too boomy for me.

To me dreads are nice, but I have owned several and have gotten used to them, and to me an auditorium has a great ringing tone, but not as "bassy" as a dread. The jumbo can be too bassy for some, but a buddy of mine has a J model (Jumbo) by Gibson, and it is super nice. OM guitars are like folk styles and are great for fingerstyle, but again that can be preference. The wood used, the bracing, etc. plays a part as well. Hope this helps.
