Looking for a Silo / Juggernaut alternative
« on: August 02, 2023, 05:39:17 PM »
Hello folks!

I have what seems the pickiest guitar I've ever had. It's very, very bright and dry sounding: Mahogany body + maple neck through / maple board / thick maple top (so pretty much 80% maple). I'm having trouble finding the right pickup set. So far I've tried these sets on it:

- EMGs (came stock)
- BKP Juggernaut set
- BKP Silo set

But I can't seem to get the right one. The Juggernaut bridge was too "spikey" on the high mids (very dry and harsh) while also balancing very poorly with the neck pickup (which is very fat). I do a lot of lead work on the bridge pickup, so switching back and forth mid solo was a disaster with these.

The Silo set seemed like the perfect choice. The neck and bridge pickups balance beautifully when switching, but the output is way lower, and I kinda expected it to have a more prominent midrange. I find it to have a lot of bass/low mid content that makes the guitar sound somewhat boxy.

So here I am again, ready to try a different set. I need something a bit hotter than the Silo (that rules out the Polymath and the Peacemaker) and with more mids. Is there something that fits this description? I feel like I only have the Holydiver and Nailbomb as viable choices (since I don't get along with ceramic pickups).

About the neck pickup, I usually go with callibrated sets, but I'm open to suggestions. I like bright neck pickups and fat bridge pickups (think Andy Timmons). I don't use split tones either. For reference I have Seymour Duncan Jazz and Sentient on other guitars which I love.

I'll love to hear your suggestions.

Ragnaroks or Warpigs would probably fit, both are fat sounding bridge pickups. They are both quite gainy and compressed. I have a Ragnarok in a pau ferro neck, mahagony body+maple cap super strat. That guitar is super bright, tight and aggressive more so than e.g. a Mayones Duvell, the Rags manage to balance it out quite well.

WARPIGS WARPIGS WARPIGS WARPIGS WARPIGS WARPIGS

Specifically alnico, it'll be less spiky and a bit warmer.

Hotter than the Silo, hilarious piles of angry, fat mids (not harsh at all, weirdly) and nice deep, warm bass.

I also considered the Warpig, but I feel like that would be like going to the other extreme (the guitar would end up warmer and hotter than the rest of my guitars). I want a bit more output, not a ton more.  :undecided:

Is the Holydiver higher output than the Silo? Has anyone compared the A-Bomb to the Juggernaut?

Ragnarok ?

Nope, I already said I don't like ceramic pickups.

The Holydiver isn't hotter than the Silo - I'd say the Silo is marginally hotter, but there's really not much in it. The HD mids are wider and less focused in the low mids, but I'd also call the HD less aggressive - it's a smooth/singing pickup. If you like bright necks, you'll like the Holydiver neck. The HD is wound asymmetrically as opposed to the symmetrical coils on the Silo, so it feels more open and less boxy.

I've played the A-bomb and Juggernauts separately, but not directly compared them. The Nailbomb is warmer and less spikey, it feels more old school and hairy, for want of a better word. Where the Silo and Holydiver feel controlled, the Nailbomb feels lairy.
