Not satisfied with The Mule in a Strandberg
« on: September 17, 2023, 07:04:33 PM »
Hi, I bought a Strandberg Standard 6 (HSS) with basswood body and roasted maple neck but I almost immediately decided to change PUs as they were quite flat...nothing special at all IMHO.
I decided to look for a set of BKP as I already own a VHII, a set of RY and an Aftermath and all of them are really great, with unique voices, rich tones (and overtones) so I pulled the trigger for two Mother's Milk and a Mule.
Well, after mounting everything I have to say that The Mule (at least in this guitar) is far from what I was expecting and from what I can hear on the net (ok, ok, taking into account also production, amps, guitars etc etc):it's quite lifeless, very low gain but without the usual characteristics associated with low output PUs. I was expecting clarity, rich harmonic content, dynamics...while it's quite lifeless and dark sounding, a bit "spongy" if I can say that.
I checked connections, DC values, I connected it directly to the amp bypassing the selector switch, nothing changes: at this point, I guess this is not the right pickup for this guitar and for the sound I have in mind. Maybe something more aggressive (I'm not looking for a metal PU), capable of screaming when needed in a heavy rock song while maintaining clarity.
I've never owned a basswood guitar, maybe this is contributing to make everything sound a bit "dull" to my ears, but can someone help me trying to identify another PU which could better fit my needs?
Maybe someone has a basswood guitar and already faced this "tonal issue".
Maybe a Peacemaker (https://youtu.be/JrTgiZ44p90?si=q2tZsTLH3dGHQroL) or a Black Dog? Or maybe another RY... I know I'm not even close to Danny but at least let me dream  :cheesy:
Thanks,
Stefano

basswood does sound a bit dull to me
I remember more imposing pickups like the miracle man or holy diver sounding good in basswood
maybe something low gain like a NECK cold sweat in the bridge or black dog would work nicely
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat
