Best 2x12 Cab under 500€
« on: May 19, 2006, 03:26:54 PM »
Hi all,

I have a 4x12 Cab (Vin30s) which I left in the band room, it's just too heavy to carry around all the time.

Now I want a 2x12 for home, as it's less massive and also meant to harmonise better with my low powered class A head.

What I thought of is a combination of V30 and Greenback or H30 speakers. There is a Marshall 2x12 cab (for the TSL212) which has V30 and H30 and it's supposed to be cool. I also heard good things about Rola Celestions?

What do you think is the best cab for tone and versatility, mainly overdriven and distorted sounds, but also from time to time bluesy licks and funky rhythms?

And OK, as there are 2x12 cabs for 1,000 EUR out there, I wanna keep it reasonable and spend no more than 500.

I've got a Marshall JTMC212 with V30s in that sounds great - really meaty with lots of midrange.  The TSL cab should be ideal I would think.

The combo of vintage 30 and G12h works great in a 2x12 cab. I have two pine 2x12 cabs either side of the stage,it makes a big sound!

Well these look great and the price is stunning.
Perfect, they even advertise as being the match for my uni ...

But heck they don't ship outside the US. Where can I get them in Europe?

OK, the gear4music guy didn't get back to me in 2 weeks, so I went out and tested some 2x12s (Brunetti, Fuchs, Custom Audio, Matchless, T.Rex, Heritage).

The Heritage won the race. It's got a Vin30 and a G12H30 and kinda Thiele openings in the front, it sounds very full and open, just the right balance for 450€. It's a cab of the new amp range from Heritage, who usually build "the better Gibsons".

I have to say the Brunetti was very nice too. 2x Vin30, with very much oomph and crisp highs.

Very happy with my choice. Also the versatility of two different speakers is a useful feature. On the next gig, I'll place the mic quickly in front of either speaker and ask the sound eng which one instantly gives the better sound.

One thing: I haven't been aware of how much influence a cab actually has on the quality of your sound. I always thought the right amp and speakers will do. But I realised that the cab design and quality make a HUGE difference!

Check out Session Award - http://www.award-session.com/amplifiers_cabinets.html
There was a write up in Guitarist recently, they do reasonably priced and good quality cabs and will fit the speakers of your choice.
Just 'cos you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you

Avatar is cool because you can get whatever speakers you want.  Most cabs these days use G12M75s (cr@p!), Greenbacks (overrated), V30s, and occasionally the G12H but you aren't limited to that with avatar.   I have a cabinet with Classic Leads and I would jump on those in a second to be used with any Marshall.
