Dammit!

I think I might have broken part of my thumb last night in a drunken moment, it $%&#ing hurts and I can't move my thumb at the base where it joins my hand!

Ah well. I can just about hold a plectrum so that's not too bad, but I can't pick my guitar up with my right hand, just can't 'grip' with my hand!

argh!

I can't give any proper advice without seeing the injured digit, but I can give some generic tips as a man accustomed to minor injury (daily fare of someone who does martial arts I guess).

Is there much or any bruising? If not chances are it's just a bad sprain which will heal quickly with rest and ibuprophen. It might also be worth putting some ice on it today to try and take down any swelling. If it's severelly bruised then it could be broken, in which case treat it as above, but also get yourself down to A&E for an x-ray. They may also strap it up for you, which would stop you playing guitar for a while but would increase healing time. Which has to be worth it in my book.

Hope you recover soon dude

Get some ice on that focker and rest. Lots and lots of rest. I broke the bone on the other side of the hand, the one in line with the pinky, and as long as it doesn't bruse you should be ok.

Also go for the ibruprofen, It's an anti-inflammitory and should help the swelling.

But rest that bitch as much as you can, no guitar for you Mr Willo. It's not allowed.

Yeah, I'm just gonna head down the shops and get some Ibuprofen. Also gonna go the hospital tomorrow and see what they say, cos it hurts rather a lot. I did manage to play guitar before for a bit though - I can hold my thumb straight so I was able to hold a plec - but I can't get any movement at all from the base of my thumb, where it joins the hand. Oh well...

Willo,

there is a walk-in centre at the hospital in Fenham, you get seen to fairly quickly there rather than going to casualty.  Hope it turns out ok.

Hey, cheers. I think tomorrow I'm going to do what I've done before and go to the minor injuries clinic at the RVI...I've been there for similar things before and get seen to very quickly; plus it's easier for me to get into town than Fenham, but if the clinic isn't open I'll take your advice and head to Fenham!

I did that with my wrist before, it was just sprained, not broken. Hurt like hell though, it couldn't move and I had to wear it in a sling for a few days!

What is the worst is when you roll your ankle over, soo painful and  you can hardly walk.. which is horrible. Dont be tempted to play guitar though it'll just make stuff worse :(

What is worst is when you hear a snapping/crackle sound from your lower leg and have to walk back to your hotel or call an ambulence...

On principle I'll never think about calling an ambulence for myself & when I die they will never find my corpse

5 weeks in a cast and I haven't gone mental yet.. This year I really enjoyed Eurovision though?

Good luck Willo, it could be worse..

Hi Willo, I hope thta it is not a break but like everyone else said, get it checked. Mrs 38th is not a fan of ibuprofen though- she swears by Arnica but as you are the guy in oain, you get to decide.

Interesting. Several people at my martial arts club swear by Arnica for getting rid of bruises (apparently witch hazel is good for the same application) but I didn't realise it had any merit as a pain killer. Ibubrophen is wonderful stuff, although prolongued use can apparently damage stomach lining and liver.

I might be in an extreme minority here, but I'd always rather break a bone than suffer serious soft tissue damage. I managed to break a metacarpal in my right hand 7 weeks ago and while I couldn't use it for anything, it's now pretty much healed so back to playing music for me. Conversely whenever I've had soft tissue damage it's taken far longer to heal and needed physio etc. Breaks do tend to heal faster and better than soft tissue, which is something of a consolation...

Hope you recover soon Willo
