just witnessed the most brilliant guitar playing..
« on: May 26, 2006, 07:14:33 AM »
My favourite guitarist Vlatko Stefanovski just came to vancouver and I saw him play live at a pretty small venue. It was first come first serve with seats so I sat front row centre (It's kinda cool liking things not many know about  )

He played with another guitarist called Miroslav Tadic who is also absolutely terrific. It was an all acoustic concert and my god was it amazing. They are not well known in North America but I would urge you to check them out, especially if like me, you like to try something different every once in a while. They are from the balkans so their music has heavy macedonian folk influence.

here's a sample of the kinda stuff they play...in my opinion..they have amazing technique but also write beautifully and do not just play fast runs to show off

yea, those guys can sure play!

i met vlatko a couple of times before, top dude. funny guy, realy down to earth.

he's pretty much a regular over here.
saw him play at a festival here a couple of years ago and he said, i know most of you guys would rather see me on stage with a wall of marshalls behind me, but today we're doing some acoustic stuff. the gig lasted about two and a half hours and there was everything on it, from acoustic heavy metal to etno type of stuff.

vlatko used to teach in san francisco for a couple of years. i dont know if its true, but rumour has it that he was satrianis teacher

last year he played with a college band/orchestra and it was a BLAST! on one of the bands guitarist blog type of thing, he said that they had guitar duels at practices and he pretty much played circles around them hehe and those guitarists aint half bad on their own.

yeah they're just amazing. I got a photo with Tadic but was not able to get one with vlatko. he was too busy talking to people from the local macedonian community  :D

He's probably the only artist that I listen to right now that I'm actually looking forward to his next release. Led Zeppelin's gone, GnR are gone, Metallica sucks......that concert was just unbelievable inspiring..

Hmm I'm not keen on jovano jovanke. its not very...musical. why do people keep clapping at random intervals? I couldn't dance to it. By god i tried. This stuff sucks. I'm sure it's impressive live, but in my room i'm just bored. Oh it's started to sound more like music now. Still bored though. I just can't relate to this; call me an ignorant youngster or whatever but its lame. Back to good ol' Led Zep, G'n'R and Metallica for me then. If i knew where the hell the balkans were, or anything about their culture i'm sure it'd mean something more...
LOVING the Mules!

This is great stuff man! Thanks for the tip!

I'll admit, I glossed over this thread initially as I presumed from the title it would just be another shred-heavy latex lover, but I'm more than happy to say I was wrong!

This is great, enjoying it a whole lot.

Reminds me ever so slightly of Shakti, but I think I am just picking up on the acoustic guitars, rhythms and odd harmony.

Indy, surely you know something about the Balkans? Like, the fact that there have been numerous conflicts over there throughout most of our lives? This music is cool IMO, precisely because it isn't Guns N Roses or whoever.

Look at the new bands that have come out that sound just like 80's bands - very few (none, really) have achieved anywhere near the success of their 80's idols. Music should be progressive, it should bring in influence from anywhere and everywhere - be that Birmingham or the Balkans - simply because if it has a note, or even just a rhythm, then it is music.

After all, Indy, you were arguing against the genre-classification of music a while back, weren't you? This music kind of reminds me of one brilliant day I had a while ago. In the mid-afternoon, I went to see a free-jazz concert; sure, the music had no obvious pulse, but if you really absorbed yourself in the music you could find your own rhythm.

Anyway, later that evening, I went to see Vai play. I quite like Vai. But the music that moved me the most that day was that of an unknown freejazz pianist, called Irene Schweizer. She's totally unknown; she doesn't even really come up on google.

My point (yes, there is one) is that music is music. Whether it comes from the 70's or the 1930's; whatever instrument plays it; whatever the production values are - music, in my opinion, is just music. So be willing to challenge yourself mate, you might find some real gems out there! :D

(not having a go btw, just rambling!)
