Warmoth Neck Re-finish: Part 2 (headstock painted)
« on: May 26, 2006, 04:50:31 PM »
The nitrocellulose paint arrived today (from http://www.manchesterguitartech.co.uk), so after waiting until it finished raining   , I went into the garden and got the black paint on the headstock done. Here's the results. Note the hand rolled fingerboard edges - I did those last night, it makes the neck incredibly comfortable, so it feels like it was made to fit your hand.

Thanks

I might be taking this guitar to Feline for a setup later on this year, since I think it needs a nut cut and subsequent truss rod adjustment. I've tried as best I can to set it up with the skills I have (truss rod adjust, intonation, saddle height adjustments etc), but unfortunately I still haven't learnt to do nut cuts yet and I'd rather learn later on a different guitar (as opposed to screwing up the nut on this one).

How did you do the "hand rolled" edges and make them look so clean? Looks like it would make it feel really nice and comfy to play, fancy doing it to my strat sometime.

I found a metal screwdriver that had a smooth shaft and rolled that against the edge of the freboard so it was pushing against the hard corner of it. The thing is, after that the edge was gone but it wasn't particuarly smooth, so I did the same with 240 grit sandpaper. After that, I removed the remaining scratches by sanding the edge with 400 grit - this time however, I moved the sandpaper along the edge but ran it up and down the neck (horizontal that time instead of vertical). I'd highly recommend it, but only do it if there's no finish (otherwise it'd ruin the finish).
