That I NEED (:twisted:) a JCM800 combo that I've found on ebay, for a great price, and is in a town close to me meaning I'd save on postage and could try it out first anyway..

I was speaking to him about it and he seems to think it'll be rubbish and unreliable, noisy and generally cr@p. There must be some way I can show that it wont be like this?!

As a Father myself, I have told my fraternal twins that if they learn and develop their ability and skill, that I will help them get what they need and want for their musicianship. They have to...

1. Advance in skill and ability
2. Help with buying it

They work around the house for so much a day doing everything from yard mowing to trash pick-up. Makes the gear more worth while for them. I know it did for me.

That is my advice to you. Sorry I couldn't help more, but that is how I do my own children, and both started last year at age 9 playing.

Yeah thats what I did for my Fender amp, but was also part of a birthday present aswell.. and my birthday isnt till November :P Although I may be able to bare with the Fender till then actually, unless I get a job beforehand which would be the best thing. I just wish people would employ me  :lol:

How old are you? I know in the U.S. here you can work at age 15 with parental consent, but I have no idea as to the child labor laws there.

Try odd jobs like mowing yards for the neighbors, mending fences, painting fences, weeding gardens, clean gutters, rake leaves, trm bushes and trees, clean up of neighbors grounds, etc. Talk to your neighbors and see what they may have to do. Make jobs for yourself. Take a walk through the neighborhood and see what you would do if those were your houses.

There is at least one neighbor that will let you work, and when that happens make sure you do the best job you can so they will tell their friends that you do good work, for a good price hinthint, and you will possibly get another job just for doing the other so well. References mean everything. Remember that.

Well I'm 17 and have tried looking for a job loads of times but no one seems to want me for some reason, its not like my grades, or application itself are bad  :? Could try putting an ad up in the village noticeboard thing for doing any odd jobs though I guess.

Maybe you should let this amp pass untill you can afford it. Job or no job, your dad shouldn't need to buy you every luxuary item you want. You already have an amp, why not wait till you have a job before thinking of getting the jmc800?

Sorry if this is confrontational, just kinda taking the other side of the argument. You're 17 now, time to be a big boy  :D

There's no gear you cannot live without, it's simply a matter of decision. If buying new gear is of higher priority to you than becoming financially independent for instance, just go for it. I'm pretty sure that if your dad buys that amp for you, you'll never really appreciate it. I'd say start saving up simply to have more money. The harder it is to earn your money, the less you'll want to spend on gear. There are no opportunities you cannot let pass. Getting rid of GAS is a matter of decision, and everytime you see a tempting opportunity, your decision will be tested.

Isn't there an organization that offers work possibilities for students during the summer for instance? We have a few organizations here that have a list of companies willing to employ high-school / college students for minor jobs like packaging, delivering, office work etc. and students may contact these companies through them. Aren't there similar organizations in the UK as well? You might be able to find some information about that on the internet.
