what leads do you use?
« on: June 20, 2006, 08:25:26 AM »
At the moment i seem to be going through leads like nothing else, my venom  one has just given up after a matter of weeks (broke in the middle of the lead, a poor quality cable).

Planet waves seem to be nice leads, though mines starting to get scratchy when you waggle the jack.

What leads are good, what ones are bad?

Been through some different brands, George Ls are handy as you can easily rearrange lengths and plugs, they are also quite rugged, to my personal taste I don't like their sound so much, but for convenience George Ls win. I think they sound a little trebly though.

The best sound I have experienced was with Sommer Spirit cables http://www.thomann.de/de/sommer_cable_the_spirit_instrument_30.htm

I think 20 Eur is not too much for a good cable and these are _really good.

I use Sommer spirit ones from guitar to effect board and to amp and George Ls for the rest (patching effects and send/return of the loop).

my planet waves ones sound scratchy too when you wiggle them at high gain...

so yeah, no recommendations, but a warning. I'm interested in getting some good leads too.

I was recently given a Cordial lead to try and have been impressed with it.

I've used Piranha leads for years and never had a problem with them.

+1 on the DiMarzio, I have a Patch Cable and it rocks. Still the Sommer Cable is the best for the money. It's better than my Planet Waves which is twice the price.

I'm not fussed on Planet Waves cables at all.  I have a few, but I don't use them except in emergencies.

I really like Spectraflex and Monster cables.  Now there are two companies where I can actually hear a difference in the quality compared to cheap cables.  Plus I have an old Spectraflex cable that I've had for years and years.  It seems built to last forever.

I usually make my own.

Got piles of ex GPO plugs knocking about the place, so it's usually just a matter of what the best co-ax I can get is. I do like the old Pinkish-brown Aerial Cables, I must admit.

I have tried Venom, Planet Waves and Whirlwind plus dozens of other typoes over the years. Whirlwinds have lasted me better than any others.

Whatever is easy to re-solder and is under £10 in the local guitar shop. Just got a cable with neutrik jacks that seems really nice though for £9.99. I don't care about cables that claim to have better high end response, if anything I've found I like a bit of high end roll off in cable. The most important thing to me is having good grounding/shielding.
