in fact the bass is being reduced by the volume control in the same way as it was before the modification, but the treble is reduced less, so it seems like you're losing bass.
you just need to play with the value of the capacitor. if you're getting too much treble through, then reduce it.
my gordon smith V has treble bleed capacitors installed, and the value picked is great - I didnt notice it at all, until I installed my riff raffs, and then I saw them in there. if you like, i can open it up at the weekend and tell you what the value is?
you could also try high quality pots, if you didn't already.
