What do Alnico II 'Stormy Mondays' sound like overdriven ?
« on: July 17, 2006, 01:59:54 AM »
Hi fellow addicts,

I have just moved my calibrated set of SMs to my S.G. (on Tim's recommendation) - after using  them (to good effect) in a Les Paul.

As I mostly play clean and have not currently got access to a rehersal room/blasting pad, please tell me what the SM's will sound like using distortion/overdrive.

If you have them in a thin bodied guitar like an S.G. - all the better, but all input appreciated.

Bear in mind that overdrive will be a 'novelty' use for an old fashioned clean player like me.

P.S. The Les Paul will now be getting Alnico IV 'Mules'.

Thanks in anticipation.

Derek.

  Using a Klon in front of a Mesa Lonestar really punches out the Stormy's, but what I get is a lot more breadth and bite from them via channel 1.  Really cuts through the mix without getting gritty/harsh, very ABB. Run via channel 2 and it gets nice and dark, without going mushy, like BS (Tony Iommi not Zak Wylde). Tried through a powerscreamer they are a different animal, with the tone rolled up on the guitar and the treble rolled up on the amp otherwise they can become a bit mushy. The powerscreamer works much better with the Mules, doesn't lose the breadth and become too harsh with plenty of harmonics. The Klon works as well with the Mules as is does the Stormys.
If this is of any help the Stormys are in a  57 and the Mules in a 58, but I did discover a dramatic release of breadth and tone when I stuck some Evidence in between.
Also an oldie.  8)

If this helps, Stormys are Alnico 2's covered, calibrated, potted and Mules are Alnico 4's covered, calibrated and potted.
It works for me but you've gotta be pushing thoses tubes hard.
Have a cold one ;-)

Played an overdiven Stormy Monday for a bit yesterday @ Phil King's house.
Guitar was a Les Paul, bridge pickups was a Riff Raff.

I prefered the Riff Raff with a clean volume boost after it -- it really nailed the 70s rock tone perfectly. The Stormy Monday required a fair amount of overdrive before it got into overdrive, and then into pure distortion. It sounded clean, articulate, and toneful!

Thanks for your feedback chaps, much appreciated !

It's just that although I usually play quite 'clean',  the S.G. into which the SMs are fitted may 'make' me use overdrive to sate it's dark desires ...

Regards,

Derek.
