Regrets....
« on: August 08, 2006, 09:33:18 AM »
ever make a silly mistake? Get this one, I have been beating myself up about it for years. As from about 1985 to 1997, if not earlier I collected Guitar Player Magazine (the American one) religiously. I can remember some of the nuggets of information in those magazines, like that for a long time Steve Vai used a "rat" pedal (not a proco but an Ibanez I think). The interviews with players were often really in depth and they were such a great source of information. My ex girlfriend threw them all away after a row one evening and I never took them out of the bin.....

The only thing I have left is a Frank Zappa flexi disk. Bugger. Oh yeah and a huge collection of Mike Varney produced shred albums !!!

I gets worse. I can't find the zappa flexi disk!!!

Sorry this is of little interest to anyone, I just needed to rant. All I can find in the flex's are oddities such as Steve Vai playing Amzing Grace and Paul Gilbert and Billy Sheehan playing "screaming blues o'mania" - classics I am sure !!!

If not many peolpe reply to this dont feel bad... If every one responded to this with their story the ISP would probably fry out :D

Mine (one of many) is letting a classic car slip through my fingers. It needed a resto but still, 3 years ago I could have bought it from my brother in law for $1600. Now you cant buy a wreck of the same car for under $8000. Man what i wouldnt give for that chance again.

No - it would have been Pro Co - nobody as far as I know has made a Rat pedal.

Vai only teamed up with Ibanez/Hoshino in 1987 - trying to get replacements for all his stolen Jacksons and Green Charvel

I loved Guitar Player for the Repairs column with Dan Erlewine

My personal silly story involves a 1965 Metal Plate logo Marshall JTM45 that I let Karl from Rockbottom have from me way too cheap - with a mint Sound City 4x12 (which unknown to me had very old and valuable celestion g12s in it)

Life is nothing but regrets, many of which I wouldn't be prepared to write about ( !), but here's one that's relevant to this forum:

Quite a few years ago I went to the London Guitar Show (or whatever it was at the time) and one of the stalls had a sunburst, rosewood neck Relic Strat for £799.  Used, but so what, it's a Relic!  This was in the early days when Relics were all beaten up (no Closet Classics or Time Machines like they have now) and had a 9.5-inch radius like a modern Strat (now they have vintage spec).  It was perfect, and light as a feather.  I wandered around the place for 10 minutes trying to decide if I could afford it, came back and it was gone.  Gone forever.

A Relic Strat for £800!  I'll never see that again!  It still gets me really annoyed every time I think about it!

Still, At least I have my collection of Guitar Player magazine from October 1981 to the present day.

Oh, and there was the time I sold my 1964 SG Special and the guy persuaded me the pickups weren't original and talked me down to £900.  And I took it, even though I didn't believe him.

Then the next day someone phoned up and said he would have paid way more than that even if it wasn't all-original.

I must be the only person to make a loss on a vintage guitar.

Feline, your comment about the Rat is something I would have agreed with (until yesterday). Infact  I bought a proco rat for that same reason. I never got anywhere near that Vai sound which cheesed me off  I got to thinking what I read all those years ago was something I had dreamt up. Anyway I was googling on TS808/9 pedals (as I was just about to go out an buy one) and came across an ibanez pedal that had been modded. The main thing I remember about it was that the normal "square" select button had been drilled  and a MXR type footswitch had been added. Not only that it was called a "tubescreamer (rat)". If I can find the link again I will post it.

Other than all the major bollocks (divorce and general youthfull shenanigans that shall not be repeated for legal reasons) there are so many to choose from. Having a girl throw her glass at my head for staring down her top was a bit of a classic. I tried t explain that I was hallucinating Paisley Wallpaper on her cleavage but she was having none of it.  :(
Splitting up with my ex for the fourth time that week, going out and ending up doing the "wild monkey dance" with some other girl then waking up, in her bed and getting the "can we just talk about this" phone call with a naked girl asleep next to me I kinda feel bad about. She did make me breakfast tho.  :)

Fubar, the cleavage is a source of many misadventures for me. I remember once leaning on a bar telling some girl that she had great knockers. What I did not know is that I had managed the almost impossible: pressing the call button on my mobile, which dialled my girlfriend and enabled her to hear me compliment another woman's top shelf....oh dear
