Pickguard shields
« on: August 10, 2006, 01:58:28 PM »
Anyone had experience with aftermarket pick guard shields ?

Do they make much differance ?

I'm considering getting a Callaham aluminium shield (£11.00) for my strat, i've seen copper ones available too which claim to be more effective than aluminium , anyone have any views on this ?

Also , while I'm here anyone tried and tested a callaham steel trem block ?  do they add much more perceptable sustain ?

Cheers

I bought a Callaham block along with their cryo pickups and harness last year but didn't buy the aluminium shield.  I went for a copper one instead.  I would say copper is better but the difference is slight.  I put the steel block in my USA strat and there is a definite change in tone with a marginal increase in sustain compared to the zinc one I took out.  They didn't have any saddles to fit USA strats so I got a set of titanium ones.

Copper is a much better conductor, so your screen will be more effective. Although the Callaham shields are very nicely made and are easier to fix down.

Hi,

I added both the callaham pickguard shield and the trem-block into my partscaster. The shield did a great job, really pleased with it. The trem-block made a really clear difference, more so than I would have thought. The most noticeable difference was with the guitar unplugged.....everything sounded clearer.

If you follow the link in my signature I kept a blog of the updates I made....it includes more info and some photos on both.

Hope that helps,
Jordan.
