Removing Covers from a pickup?
« on: August 11, 2006, 09:54:08 AM »
Im thinking of removing the cover from my Cold Sweat so it matches the rest of the guitar..

If i remove it will it be a pickup underneath it ready to play? or will it be without bobbin tops? or something strange like that?

It is a regular pickup underneath but it will be covered in wax.  The best way to do this if you are not sure is to send it back to Tim to do it.
So many pickups, so little time

But what if it turns out the bobbins are the wrong colour to match your other pickups?

Are all the covered BKPs the same colour underneath, or could they randomly be black, cream or zebra like old Gibson pickups?
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

I think removing the cover, unless it's done by BKP, voids the warranty.

Once a cover is removed the coils underneath should be fine, quite waxy though but easy enough to clean up.What they don't have though is dress tape to protect the tiny fly leads and the sides of the coils hence why I prefer to do this for our customers so that a) I take responsibility for getting the cover off so if a coil goes down I can fix it and b)redress the now uncovered pickup to protect  it.

yea I've put my own black protective tape around it, and cleaned it pretty well.

Looks exactly the same as the others.. I can see what you mean by damaging the wires at the side i nearly chopped one off by putting the cover back on to compare the looks.

But yea i've managed to do it safetly
