Using line out of hotplate for recording?

Does anyone here use the Hotplates line out to get a decent tone for recording? I cant seem to get a usable tone! It sounds fake and thin whenever I do it, even after going into my V-Amp 2 then EQ'ing it, it sounds cr@p! What do you need to get a decent tone? Speaker emulator maybe? Bare in mind I dont have an amazing soundcard (stock "Sigmatel" one in my laptop) so probably will never get amazing sound quality..

I tried the Line Out into my PODxt with no sim, but a speaker emulation. It sounded awful. ;) THe Marshall JMP Speaker Emulation thingy-ma-bob is supposed to be a good, but it's more expense... :(

It's a real shame that THD (or any other attenuator manufacturers for that matter) didn't put a speaker sim in the line out, but there again, it'd bump the price up even more. Using a mic up against the speaker is still the best way to get your tone onto tape, the HotPlate lets you do it at a more bearable level...

Yep I thought mic'ing would be the best, but it'd probably cost more for that as I'd need the mic, probably a stand to hold it, and a decent mixer or something to get the sound into the bloody computer :P

I've noticed that unless you mic it up or have some godlike cab simulator your tone through the line out will have this really fizzy top end, and you will have zero warmth. However, it will sound very tight and upfront.  Richard Kruspe from Rammstein sorta uses that to his advantage. I heard he mics up his amps, but also records a layer or two through the line out on a Sansamp preamp and mixes it in so you only hear the tight bass.

I found a place a while back selling SM57s for £40, instead of the £70 they seem to be fetching elsewhere http://www.jarlonline.co.uk/index.asp?function=DISPLAYPRODUCT&productid=40

That leaves you some more money to spend on a stand...but yeah, you'd probably need something to get it to your laptop with...

Nice! Cheers for that, I'll have to keep that in mind (or bookmarks :P) for when I get enough cash... which no doubt will be ages away, coz I still need to finish my strat... then again if the strat is really awesome I may just as well sell my LP...

i didnt even try the lineout, cant stand DI'ed guitars sounds like anus..

Love the hotplate though makes great tones possible at reasonable levels.

Yep, I'd give up on trying to DI your guitar. I've never actually heard a completely convincing speaker sim and the usual fizzy, straight DI sound is pretty unusable for most things.

Yeah I might aswell give up then.. will get that mic pre and cheap SM57 as soon as I can as I'm getting sick of my V-Amps tones now.. probably will have to wait till my B'day or something for the stuff though, by which time I'll want something else probably..

It's the never ending cycle: Buy a piece of equipment => Discover another bit of kit necessary to do what you want with it => Spend next 6months or so saving => repeat ad infinitum!

Why couldn't I have just got into something cheap like kniting?  :cry:
