BKP's for my ibanez?
« on: August 17, 2006, 03:27:25 PM »
I need a some help making a decision on pickups for my basswood Ibanez RG1570. All the reviews on harmoney-central for bare knuckle pick-ups are for Les Paul style mahogany or alder guitars which makes me wonder if they would sound good in basswood :?:

I'm using a Peavey 6505 (an updated version of the 5150) so i would need some pick-ups to provide extra gain. I am not bothered about the clean settings because my Epiphone Les Paul Elitist Standard can cover it brilliantly. Also I play metal so there will need to be clear pinch harmonics, high gain etc.

I will suggestions for two humbuckers (neck and bridge) and maybe the single coil in the middle position because the stock pick-ups are quite dull and lifeless.
I was thinking about getting the 'Miracle Man' set because it sounds like it will give me the extra gain i was wanting, but I'm not experienced with BKP so any suggestions will be greatly considered.

Thanks in advance! :D

definately at least a miracle man in the bridge.

i would say go with a MM in the neck too.. and maybe an irish tour in the middle, or if you want more metal meltdown a trilogy

Hey man, that could be my next guitar, it's a great axe.

I'm thinking Calibrated Miracle Mans here, or maybe a Miracle Man bridge and a Cold Sweat in neck.

Nailbombs apparently sound great in basswood guitars. Holy Divers are also a good choice (i use them in my ibanez) but the holy divers don't have as much bass responce as a miracle man but it still gives a good metal tone,.

I would say calibrated Nailbomb or Miracle Man set or EITHER of those two in the bridge with a Cold Sweat in the neck if like a nice, fluid distorted tone in the neck for sweeps and that smooth Petrucci-esque lead tone. I have a Miracle Man/Cold Sweat set in my Mahogany ESP/LTD MH-301...sounds excellent- power of EMGs and with much better cleans, added bass and less "ice picky"! On the other hand...you could go for the Nailbombs. They are also excellent (especially in a basswood guitar) and have a more organic feel. Never fear...just because they aren't as high output doesn't mean that they can't lower the boom for some heaviness...Honestly, I don't think you can go wrong with either Miracle Men or Nailbombs in a basswood guitar- that wood being fairly balanced and neutral in tone...not highly middy, bassy, or bright. It depends on what you're really looking to be playing with it...For speed and thrash metal...go for Miracle Men. For a more "shred" oriented style that calls for less output and great, and balanced tone you should go with an alnico pickup like the Nailbomb. I hope this helped.

With all I've said, I forgot one important thing: The 6505 already has loads of gain and maybe you'd like to go with something cleaner, more open, and less compressed than the Miracle Men. A Cold Sweat set may be just the ticket for a ceramic pickup if you want to go that route. You've got a lot to choose as far as Alnico pickups go...and all of them are highly recommended. Can't go wrong with Nailbombs, Holy Divers, or Rebel Yells.

Downrodeo i though Nailbombs were better for that kind of thrash/speed metal approach.

I've got a set of MM with a Trilogy middle in my Ibanez RT and it's a killer combo.

Missispi Queens.. 5150's have too much gain :P

Nar I'd Say a MM set would be ideal if your after that kinda mid 90's death metal tone with the 5150, eg InFlames etc..
