searching for a specific tone...
« on: August 26, 2006, 12:39:57 PM »
Hey all, i just picked up an ibanez jem and while it sounds great im going for more of a paul gilbert sound. im curious if there is anything in the bkp arsenal that could put me there. i use DiMarzios in all of my guitars, and while i think they're great i figured since its a new guitar i might as well try some new pickups :]

currently mr. gilbert is using a tonezone bridge / paf pro neck. both are alnico 5.  the only other info i got from the dimarzio site about them was that the tonezone has 375 output and 17.31 DC Res. the PAF pro has 300 output and 8.4 DC Res.

if it helps at all..here is a youtube clip of one of my favorite gilbert tones

thats pretty much it. i work 12 hours today so ill have to thank you guys in advace for the help :].

Tough one!

Maybe a VH2, Abraxas or Cold Sweat?

I would say ... Rebel Yell set!  They would sound smashing in a JEM.

hahah that was great :) His tone was really good on that video, anyone know which Laney combos he uses?

I also found this clip of Scarified whilst watching that video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isFPCMAcPZM so bloody good! I love the basslines in this song and the drums sound so good!

looks like an LC50 to me.

on 2nd thought..

if you look at the very beginning of scarified, which shows only paul.. you see the amp has 2 rows of knobs and the LC only has one.. yet i cant find the amp on the laney website.. must be a discontinued model... or a custom made one =P

I have the tonezone in my Epi Les Paul. And I loves it.

Might seem silly, but why don't you just get one of those?

That's quite a strange combination. I used to have one in a thin Strat-copy and even then I felt it was too middy and bassy. If you like it, though, good for you. :)

Yeah its strangeI know, I was after a super thick tone at the time and it nails it. That and a Duncan APH-2 in the neck is a strange but fun combo.

the amp is a discontinued VC50-212 w/ matching 212 cab.

the trilogy in the neck that i got hits the gilbert tone with my amp.. you just got to thin it out with the EQ and add some verb to it and imo, it nails it pretty much.

I'm sure they would, but I hope that doesn't mean the RY bridge will sound like a Tone Zone, or I'm going to be very disappointed when I put mine in my Paul!

I like DiMarzios, but the Tone Zone in a mahogany guitar is horrible.  Just a big mush of bass and midrange.
