2x12 cabs...
« on: August 31, 2006, 05:56:20 PM »
Hey guys! I have a Marshall DSL 100...I have a 4x12 Marshall 1960, but I was thinking that it's a little too much for many situations and want to get a smaller cabinet, and thought that an affordable, high quality cab would be ace ! I was thinking about Avatar...but Matamp also looks really good. I'm not quite sure, but I know that I want to upgrade my SOUND as well as make it easier to truck around the head...4x12's are a bitch to move, as we all know. I play progressive rock and metal and want a really nice, warm tone that can get nasty (AND NOT SACRIFICE CLEANS!!!), so advice on speakers would be GREAT. Thanks guys!

celestion g12 75t or celestion vintage 30's

I find the v30's a bit thin and harsh at times though.

V30s thin and harsh?  I find them beefy and mid-rangey!

^ me too, but I'm not sure they're what the threadstarter wants. they're quite in your face, and proactive. they should be renamed "poochy".

I want really good bite and they have to be able to handle a soaring Vai-ish lead sound with good low end for metal rhythm, but I can't make a big sacrifice on cleans. They're important! I look at my tone as being like John Petrucci's (I'm no Petrucci, technique wise, but it's that thickness that I'm after). I know I'm not using a Road King, but thick, warm, and responsive is what I'm after.

I find V30s honky in the mids with spikey treble if you use them with old non-master volume amps like Marshall plexis or JMPs.

On the other hand, they really start to shine with higher-gain master volume amps like the Silver Jubilee series Marshalls and Dual Rectos.

2x12s are for pussies, stick with the 4x12

Gonna be getting a Recto 2x12 for my Mesa, it is much better than the 4x12 to my ears in this case.
