I have a Ibanez Tube Screamer TS-9. They are very common, cost about £90 and I really like mine. Stevie Ray Vaughan, used the TS808 which was a predecessor.  I think it is very commonly used by modern blues players.

There are some people who say it's not as good as earlier versions, I would not know as I have never really heard them apart from on SRV records.

I'd suggest something like a Fulltone Fulldrive 2 myself.

Very versatile pedal that lets the natural sound of the guitar shine through (imo at least).
Selling lots of gear, enquire within!......

You can modify an SD-1 into both of those and further. SD-1s are cheap and easily modified to suit what you want.

I <3 SD-1s ;)

booyah!

(that's an agreement, by the way. it is a lot of cash though, but it's fricken' awesome.)

EDIT: for cheaper:

i don't think the ts9 is what you want, the ts808 is better for mellower stuff.

the trex alberta is quite nice, as is the black box x-ray.

depends on your budget, obviously.

TS-808s are great but just buy one of the cheaper Ibanez Tube Screamers for around £40 and modify it - we're talking the difference of a couple of resistors and caps here.  Trust me, the reissue TS9 and TS808 are not worth the money.

Best deal is on a used TS5 or TS10.  You could even get a pre-modded one like this for £20... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Ibanez-TS5-modded-to-TS808-spects-brown-mod-39-00_W0QQitemZ190026405333QQihZ009QQcategoryZ64418QQssPageNameZWD2VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

It is even cheaper to buy an SD-1 and mod it to TS808 specs. It is the same circuit basically.

I think that the TS-9 is getting a bit of unfair treatment.  Henry Garza  of the Los Lonely Boys uses a bog standard TS-9 and he has a great tone. saying that he uses a modded fender twin too. I use my TS-9 after my wah and before a 1980's Chandler Tube Driver. I love the tones I get. Maybe other people would think they are poop - they might be. Perhaps the best thing is to try a stack of pedals out and see which suits.  My mate has a Wylde Overdrive which he loves but I think sounds too artificial, I think that is based on the SD-1 (?); the proco vintage rat is not to my taste but I have heard a reutz modded version (one capacitor on the pcb is clipped) and it sounds lovely.

I get mine from http://www.smallbearelec.com/home.html

Capacitors you will need low voltage poly film:
http://www.smallbearelec.com/Categories.bok?category=Capacitors%2C+Low+Voltage+Poly+Film

Resistors;
http://www.smallbearelec.com/Categories.bok?category=Resistors

As for chips, there are a few choices; http://www.geocities.com/overdrivespider/SD1/opamps.htm but I would recomend the RC4558p:

Dont forget to buy a chip holder:

+1 to the above! I really like Keeleys SD-1 mod, the only thing I like better is the mod I have in development   http://www.geocities.com/overdrivespider/SD1/stepfour.htm

On the MXR Wylde O/D I could hear a metallic sound at the end of some notes, it's almost like a slapback sound. I sometimes get that with my boss delay (not slapback, but a metal chinging). it makes the guitar sound a bit artificial. Anyone know what causes that?
