Recommendations of my Les Paul
« on: September 16, 2006, 03:16:10 PM »
Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a 2006 Les Paul Standard 60's neck and I want to upgrade the pickups. They currently have the Burstbucker Pro set in them and they are nice. I'm going through a Marshall TSL and DSL heads. As it is I love the sound of the mids, especially when I bend the G-string and attack the strings hard.

I want a se of pickups that will enhance this and also tighten up the bottom end. The sound I am going of is 70/80 rock. Out of the list of BK pickups I think the Black Dogs would do it for me.

What do you guys think and do you have any other recomendations?

Welcome!

As is often the case, your first impression sounds right to me!
The Black Dog will give you just what you're looking for, and you'll also get unprecidented clarity, as well!!

Hey thanks for your reply..

I've been doing some more reading and I've also come across the Mule pickup that may be a choice.

How would you compare the two pickups?

I've had very limited experience with the Mule, but I know a few forum bros have both the Black Dog and the Mule, and they will chime in soon, I'm sure.

The thing is you see, I want a pickup where I can develop my own sound, so it needs to be versatile. I'm not into replicating another artist sound but if I was to compare sounds of guitarists I do like then I would say I'm somewhere between Jimi Page and Joe Perry.

Having listened to lots of samples and reading on this site, I'm edging back to the Black Dog set.

When ordering, it asks for spacing i.e. 50mm or 52mm. What would be the spacing for a Les Paul Standard?

Also, my current pickups have a metal cover on them so could I use that cover rather than ordering them with BKP?

Get 50mm spacing for a Les Paul (or any guitar with a tune-o-matic bridge) - 52mm spacing is a shade too wide.

Also, it's not as simple as just wrenching off the existing cover & sticking it on an uncovered pickup - there's the pole screws, potting, earthing etc.  IMO you'd be better off just ordering a covered BKP - it's not as if there aren't enough options on offer for covers! :)
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

Do check it with a ruler first - some of the LPs with the "Nashville" bridge actually have 52mm spacing.

Black Dogs, VHII, or if you want something a little more 80s (but does the 70s well too, trust me), the Rebel Yells.
Real men turn their volume to 11!

Rebel Yells + Les Paul = the Ultimate Rock Pickup.
