Peavey Valveking?

Anyone ever play one of these?

I hear their cleans are pretty good, but how do they do metal?

They do a killer overdrive from my limited experience

Tried the 112 combo with some metal guitar in a shop, even at low volume I could get some really good death metal tones. No grind core madness but enough for my taste   It sounds even better when pushed (but the shop owner didn't really liked that  )
A little overdive stomp will get you to extreme territories I think.
The thing is so cheap and versatile I don't understand how those cr@p solid state Marshall still sell

depends what you mean by metal. it'll do stuff like maiden and megadeth grand... something mor modern like killswitch engage would be a bit more of a struggle...

seconded (in addition to what I already wrote). it won't compete with boutique, though.

^ yup, I'm agreeing with you, mark, no need to worry. I'm just used to having to clarify everything. I must be too used to UG... mention something's good, and the next day about 40 new guys are proclaiming that the valveking is better than engl/splawn/whatever.

How about the more thrash side of metal?

 The thing is with that place, is that everyone promotes the gear they own as better than everything else - even if they've never heard of the everything else involved (which they usually haven't). I think the only reasonable reccommendation i got from there was when you told me to buy my Engl :drink:

^ :drink:

i guess the valveking would do thrash not too bad, most thrash metal isn't too gainy at all... i'm guessing an EQ pedal might persuade it to get a slightly more authentic tone...

All those low gain comments makes me wonder if I'm not getting old :? When I tried it, it had enough gain for anything I tried when maxed. Maybe it was the low tuning I don't know :?

^ it had plenty of gain- i just thought that at low volumes adding gain increased the "mud" factor. so yeah, plenty of gain, but a lot of it wasn't really usable, IMO.

The Peavey Ultra Tube was a better amp (if you can find one second hand) but they have one thing in common; shitety Chinese valves. If you're gonna buy one I'd recommend talking to Derek at Watford Valves about the sound you want and re-tube it straight away. You can always keep the others as emergency replacements.
