Marshall JMP 1?
« on: September 22, 2006, 02:49:26 PM »
I'm toying with the idea of going back down the path of building a rack again maybe based on a JMP 1, I've never had a chance to try one and was wondering if anyone here has. Also does anyone know where I might find some sound clips, cheers.

My friend bought one about a year ago and it had some really nice presets and tones but after a few months he bought a small Traynor valve amp.  He was putting the JMP-1 through the Traynor with good results but ended up selling the JMP not much longer after that, prefering to plug straight in to the Traynor.

I've had a JMP1 for years and years and I'm still finding good sounds in it. I run an fx processor through its fx loop to give it a bit of a boost. Can do almost any suond though - plenty of gain for heavier riffs but you can back it off and get some nice thick blues tones from it too.
I've posted some sound clips of my Warpigs and MM loaded guitars -
http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3242 - Sound quality isn't great but it gives an idea of  what metal tones it can give. What style of music do you play?
I'd definitely recommend getting one.
MM set, warpig set, about to be fitted - custom 7 bridge 'pig, CS7 neck.

I love mine.  It's nicely flexible and you can get some great sounds out of it.

This isn't the best example in the world, but it's the only recording I have to hand at the moment:

Muttley - Teenage Kicks (John Peel Tribute)

There are 4 guitar tracks on that, 2 with my JEM7BSB and 2 with my Gibson SG (this is pre-BKP unfortunately) and all 4 were recorded with my JMP1 into a 9100 power amp and 1960a 4x12 (stock speakers back then).

Bass and Drums were programmed.

Another unit that is very similar to the JMP1 but with a littl more versatility is the Rocktron Pirhana

many suspected that Rocktron based it on the JMP1 but gave it a sweepable mid frequency to allow a more detailed sound

I have one in my rack and it's really rather good

Interesting.  The other guitarist in my band was thinking about getting one of those.

I'd reccommend the Piranha over the JMP-1, especially if you're looking to do more high gain stuff. You could probably pick one up for cheaper as well.

Other preamps I'd suggest you take into consideration are the Peavey Rockmaster and Engl e530. Neither are MIDI, but they sound awesome.

Poweramps though will also have a huge impact on your sound as well remember, so make sure whatever pre you get, you pair it up with a decent (preferably) all valve poweramp.

Ask Glenn Tipton :) He's a Piranha user (or least was for long time)

I've got a spare cos i bought two when they first came out because I was that impressed with them - and damn they were like nearly £800 each back then.

Why?

I had a rack at home and one at the workshop but now I use a Marshall head in the workshop as it stops me fiddling with presets all day - so one of them is redundant now

Still pretty much as new - I dont gig - PM me if interested
