Always surprises me when places say that - How the hell does anyone get experience to start with? :P

Go back and ask if you can work there for a month for free, and if they're still not convinced you can do it then fine and it hasn't cost them anything - but if they like you then they can keep you on...

yeh but i kinda need the money, and they already gave the job to somebody else

thing is, i worked in a shop for like 3 years, but i couldn't put it on my CV as i wasn't 16 at the time
