Whitesnake - Good to be Bad
OK, so I did buy it, and I'm finding it quite strange. The songs are really good, and I like the guitar playing... but what in the name of all that's holy has happened to Coverdale's voice? He sounds fine most of the time, but sometimes he's really high and thin. And every now and then he drops into his old lower register, and suddenly he sounds like he's gargling a bucket of phlegm. Has he had throat surgery or something?
And the production is bizarre - really dense and murky. The guitars and vocals are half-buried in a big rumble of bass and keys - the guitar tones don't have any edge or clarity. Except maybe the last track, which is a bit more like the old days when Coverdale wasn't afraid to have a really sparse production, with his voice "naked" at the front of the mix. I really should have Lovehunter and Ready an' Willing on CD....
