IMHO, The Gathering USED to be good, for cds like Mandylion and Nighttime Birds.  Then they went all "Floyd" and lost me as a fan.  That being said, Anneke still has a killer set of pipes.

Well, I do kinda agree -- I only have Mandylion and Nighttime Birds and didn't bother with the rest. ;)  But I quite like those two!

As far as Lacuna Coil goes... I dug Comalies alot more than the latest one... though it's still decent.  Not a whole heck of a lot of bands out there fronted by women that really do it for me.  I can only stand so much After Forever and Oratory.  Now Nightwish makes me want to claw my own eardrums out with a rusty coat hanger.

I really like the idea of heavy rock/metal with female vocals -- perhaps because I like heavy rock/metal and I like a number of classic rock/folk female vocalists, and besides it just seems to me that the relative EQing of fat, overdriven guitars and high clear vocals ought to work well -- but I find that the implementation of female-voiced rock/metal often leaves much to be desired.  I like those two Gathering albums, I like what I've heard of LC's In a Reverie, Comalies, and even Karmacode, but After Forever, Nightwish, Oratory, and Within Temptation just leave me cold.

Hey Carlaz where can I find some examples of these folks Sun Dial they sound interesting to me.

They're linked off my MySpace page, but here're the direct links to the MySpace pages for Sun Dial and for main man Gary Ramon (who's page has, basically, a few more Sun Dial samples:

http://www.myspace.com/sundial001
http://www.myspace.com/garyramon

The regular Sun Dial web page is here: http://www.sundial.org.uk/

You can find their albums pretty easily on amazon.co.uk; Other Way Out, Return Journey, and Acid Yantra are all pretty good, IMO.  There's supposed to be a newly remastered retrospective compilation called Shards of God coming out shortly.  The band was pretty active in the early '90s, and then it seemed had kinda gone into hiatus, but seem to be gearing up for new recordings and gigs again.

They remind me of a sort of "British Invasion" version of Monster Magnet.  Gary Ramon clearly likes the Beatles, his '60s classic garage/psych, and walls o' fuzz. ;)  It's a too much pop to be stoner metal, but too heavy and stoned to be pop.  Maybe, like, if the Stone Roses had listened to more Sabbath or something .... ;)

Oh yes indeed, I love Spiritual Beggars and the mighty Clutch!  Re the "new" Clutch album, do you mean Robot Hive/Exodus, Carlaz?  It's exceedingly fine, and there are two tracks left over from the Robot Hive sessions on Pitchfork & Lost Needles, which are just mind-bogglingly brilliant.

Well, both actually, since I've only heard a bit of Robot Hive/Exodus and none of Pitchfork & Lost Needles!  Clearly, a situation I need to rectify.  I think Clutch are one of the best bands to come out of the US in the last decade (indeed, one of the best bands of the last decade!).

I've never listened to Lacuna Coil or The Gathering, but I should check them out - I love female vocalists in rock bands.

Definitely check out The Gathering's Mandylion; the opening track "Strange Machines" pretty much defines why we should like female-voxed heavy rock. :)  Nighttime Birds is also a good album, though as was pointed out, the band then started to think they were the second-coming of Pink Floyd, which I'm not sure was a good direction for them .... But, anyway, I've only just checked out a bit of Lacuna Coil recently, mostly bits of their Comalies album, and it seems quite good.

I don't think The Gathering have a MySpace page, but you can listen to a few bits of Lacuna Coil on theirs: http://www.myspace.com/lacunacoil

i like The Gathering, the new album was brilliant!

I forgot to add:

Symbyosis http://www.symbyosis.com/

Some of the BEST metal guitar playing in a long time...plenty of mp3s on their site, heres one off the recent album http://www.symbyosis.com/phoenix00/medias/wingsphoenix/symbyosis_CD01_famine.mp3

Totally digging the vocals, the lead guitar tone and the melodic soloing!

The track above has one of the longest\best solo cuts off the album, not really shred, just soulful metal goodness  \m/

Thanks for that

Apart from Fools Gold (the direction the roses should have moved in) the suggestion that they needed to listen to more Sabbath is the best suggestion I have heard for years :)

I found their home site last night but didn't find any audio :( I will try the others later (when the boss goes home) though I am currently computerless in work and having to use a communal machine to work on

I notice that they have been mentioned alongside Bevis Frond & The Magic Mushroom Band who I found immencely enjoyable in the early 80s. Unfortunitely all my MM Band tapes where stolen (including a vast number of studio leftovers which where better than their official releases)

Rob...
Goodbye London !

Ah, you are a man of taste!  One of my favorite concerts was a storming Bevis Frond gig in Cambridge's (now sadly defunct) The Boat Race venue in autumn 1995.  Amazing.  I saw them a few more times in the late '90s, and Nick Saloman really is a lovely bloke (as well as a first rate songwriter and psychedelic guitar-meister).

The latest Aural Innovations online newsletter has interviews with both Nick and Gary Ramon of Sundial: http://aural-innovations.com/issues/issue34/issue34.html

(Bunch of other nterviews there, too: Dave Brock, the dudes from Nebula ....)

Always the way with these kinds of bands.  Like, I really dig Sun Dial's Return Journey, which poses as an album but is actually a collection of various stuff Ramon had lying about, I think .... :)

Forbidden... EVIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIL!  Fan-friggin-tastic thrash cd.  I caught a live vid of these guys from like 2001 on youtube the other day.  Wow... Russ has really let himself go.  And I couldn't really tell if it was the same guys in the band as back on FE and TiF.

As for Marty's new one, at least it doesn't suck as bad the previous few.  It's still a far cry from Cacophony, but it's a step in the right direction.  Well, other than that J-Pop singer caterwauling on the one tune.  Can you say "skip button"?  I knew you could.  :)

Regs,
Jeff
