Yep!  I've got the 'original' re-re-mixed versions of Eliminator, Fandango and Tres Hombres already, so I ordered:

ZZ Top's First Album
Rio Grande Mud
Tejas
El Loco
Deguello

Basically so I've got everything up to and including Eliminator.  Rev Willie G is one of my favourite players, so I thought I'd get some of the more obscure stuff  :)

At the same time I've also got coming:

Joe Bonamassa - The Ballad Of John Henry
The Answer - Everyday Demons

Sounds like a good bunch.

My very ever first CD purchase back in 1983 was ZZ Tops Afterburner. That was when The CD player was the latest thing and cost a fortune! Look where its all gone since, tech, it's mental isn't it!

What's obscure about those TF? That's the "proper" ZZ Top cannon

I haven't organised a CD replacement of El Loco yet, but otherwise I have everything up to and excluding Eliminator on CD. I do have Eliminator and Afterburner on vinyl from when they came out, but my interest started to wane with Eliminator and was completed killed off when I got Afterburner home...

Having said that though, I was sampling some clips of the later albums the other day, and it sounds like things improved, and I probably want everything apart from Afterburner...

I would definitely recommend the Live in Texas DVD though - got it with christmas money, and it's one of the live music dvds I've watched most.

I love the track "A fool For Your Stockings" on Deguello' :  sleazy, laid back and generally great ... 8)

Afterburner was saved for me by 'Rough Boy' and 'Can't Stop Rockin' .

Tom Waits - Rain Dogs

Got it, wanted to like it, couldn't bring myself to.

Then... one day...

Started to listen to it on the train home from Canary Wharf, after a cr@p day at work, and finally got it.  Getting to really really like it.

Mark.

Good Man !   Rain dogs is a classic, have you ( from amongst all the other great later day Waits stuff ) tried 'Mule Variations' ?  8)

Steady on!  Might have to give it a few years to get used to this album first...

  Sounds about right ...

If you want a really 'out there' experience - listen to a copy of the Tom Waits album 'Real Gone' ;  or the dark romanticism of 'Alice' .

It still amazes me how he dragged most of us from his early , smoother - and easily digestible 'Bar room ballad'  albums -  notably during his time on ( the aptly named ) Asylum label ,  through to his genius , but often challenging later work.

I think he puts a whole new meaning to the word 'enigmatic' .  It would be amazing to meet him ...  8)
