I quite like the X Factor at times. Because it perfectly demonstrates EVERYTHING about the pop industry.

The twins are already made, I reckon. They're gonna walk out of that, maybe have a single, then they're gonna end up co-presenting childrens TV or similar and have a career. And THAT'S what X Foctor's about, making quick cash-in stars. It's got nothing to do with music. It doesn't need to, people buy what they're told.

We really should stop going on about this on this thread   , but....

I don't believe it is about the best singers.  I know Cowell sometimes says "it's a singing contest", but five minutes later he says "you need to be an all-round entertainer" or "nice voice, but you're not a pop star" - basically he uses whatever argument suits him at that moment.

But it's not called "Best Singer", it's called "The X Factor" - that (IMO) means something intangible, star quality, charisma, whatever you want to call it.

Iggy Pop can't sing for toffee, but he sure as hell has "The X Factor".  Hardly anyone on XF (the show) ever does.  That includes Leona Lewis, by the way, who's beautiful and has a fine voice.... but all the personality and charisma of a fencepost.

At least John & Edward are entertaining - that means they deserve to be there, IMO.  And somebody's voting for them.

agreed. i don't watch it, though.

it was the same with strictly come dancing last year (i don't watch it, my mum and sister do so i picked a bit up), complaining about john sargeant for being a bad dancer. If it were about dancing they wouldn't really pick any celebrities, i fear.

it's an entertainment show, and much as i disagree with that in principle (I don't mean i disagree with entertainment, i mean letting people through who aren't as good because people like them more or they're more entertaining  ), that's pretty much the premise.

Yep, which is further demonstrated by the fact that everybody loses interest after the TV series ends - even the people who get all worked up about it and vote every week.

It's basically about making money from the phone calls and getting the Christmas Number 1 (they had to ruin that, too  :x ).  The winner gets one guaranteed hit single, one tour, an album of inappropriate cover versions... and they're lucky if they ever release album no. 2.

Back to the off topic X Factor discussion.

I read an article claiming that the only real winners in the show was the judges because there's so much focus on them and their personalities. This is certainly true viewed from a Danish perspective. Don't know if it's the same in England. Can someone please comment on it?  :D
